London 2012 Olympic Games bronze medallist Uranchimeg Munkh-Erdene returned with a title in the Mongolian National Selection Tournament

The Mongolian Boxing Federation hosted its National Selection Tournament for their elite women and men boxers before the start of the next year. Mongolia’s London 2012 Olympic Games bronze medallist Uranchimeg Munkh-Erdene returned to the sport with a title. AIBA Women’s Youth World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Namuun Monkhor won the title of the women’s featherweight (57kg) while the Kharkhuu brothers did strong performance in the men part of the selection event.
The best boxers of the country received the right to box in the Mongolian National Selection Tournament in Ulaanbaatar. The Mongolian boxers have been preparing to the upcoming Jakarta 2018 Asian Games and after the successful year of 2017 their top athletes have got great expectations in the big events.
The first gold medal of the women’s competition was delivered by 18-year-old Balsan Mungunsaran who shocked ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Boxing Championships bronze medallist Jargalan Ochirbat in the final of the light flyweight (48kg). The final verdict was split decision to the favour of Balsan Mungunsaran which was a big surprise in the Mongolian National Selection Tournament.
The best fight in the woman part of the Mongolian National Selection Tournament was held between ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Boxing Championships bronze medallist veteran Nandintsetseg Myagmardulam and AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships quarter-finalist Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg at the flyweight (51kg). The more experienced Myagmardulam dictated the best tempo and controlled her final over the 22-year-old rival.
Namuun Monkhor claimed bronze medal in the AIBA Women’s Youth World Boxing Championships in Guwahati and the 18-year-old talent was confident in the final of the featherweight (57kg) against Nergui Oyun-Erdene. The young talent, who is member of the national team since 2015, impressed the judges with her strong combinations in the Mongolian National Selection Tournament.
Bolortuul Tumurkhuyag was gold medallist in the 2012 ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Boxing Championships at the light flyweight (48kg) but this time she won the lightweight (60kg) in the national event. The fifth gold medal among the women boxers was captured by 21-year-old Erdenetuya Enkhbaatar who did enough against Munkhbat Myagmarjargal and won the title of the welterweight (69kg).
The first title in the men part of the Mongolian National Selection Tournament was taken by 21-year-old Enkhmandakh Kharkhuu who defeated Damdindorj Munkh-Erdene in the final of the light flyweight (49kg). ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships silver medallist Gan-Erdene Gankhuyag moved up to the flyweight (52kg) but his efforts were enough to beat Nurlan Askhar in the final.
Rio 2016 Olympian and Summer Universiade winner Enkh-Amar Kharkhuu had to do his very best to win over Bat-Ochir Tumurkhuyag in the final of the bantamweight (56kg). Mongolia’s super talented 20-year-old Misheelt Battumur won the next title at the lightweight (60kg) where he was too quick for Erdenetsogt Bat-Ulzii while Rio 2016 Olympian Erdenebat Tsendbaatar failed to get any medal in the event.
London 2012 Olympic Games bronze medallist and AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Uranchimeg Munkh-Erdene returned to the world of boxing in the recent weeks and proved top performance in the Mongolian National Selection Tournament. The 35-year-old light welterweight (64kg) boxer, who is member of the national team since 2000, dominated all of his fights and returned in top shape.
Otgonbaatar Byamba-Erdene won the Ulaanbaatar Box Cup this year and he was able to continue his winning path also in the selection event where he defeated Batzorig Otgonjargal in the final of the welterweight (69kg). The last gold medal was achieved by Ulaanbaatar Box Cup bronze medallist 23-year-old Davaanyam Davaasuren who used the best tactic against Batbayar Erkhembayar in the final of the middleweight (75kg).
