Interview of the week – Jordan’s sensation Zeyad Eshaish

Jordan’s Zeyad Eshaish is Jordan’s new sensation who qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games through the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event. The welterweight (69kg) boxer was fantastic in the whole event and the 22-year-old promising talent could be an Olympic medal contender in Tokyo.

Zeyad Eshaish was born in Jordan in 1998 and won joined to the international events in 2015 following his national successes. He was involved to the elite national team of Jordan in 2016 as a youth boxer at the age of 18 and attended in the qualification events of the Rio Olympic Games in Qianan and in Baku and he proved his strong potential on these appearances.

Eshaish competed at the Tashkent 2017 ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships and lost to only Uzbekistan’s eventual winner Shakhram Giyasov. He was 20 by the time of the Jakarta 2018 Asian Games where he bagged a bronze medal and he reached the quarter-finals at the Bangkok 2019 ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships.

He advanced to the final and walked over to the gold medal in the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event on home soil where he felt the support of his family, friends and local fans.

“I have been dreaming for the moment to qualify for the Olympic Games which is the target for all athletes around the world. I can’t tell how it feels or me and for my family as I will represent my country in the biggest world stage. I am really excited.

I will be flying to Japan with hopes and dreams of the Jordanian people who will stand behind me. While I am walking in the street, people are asking about me and my training. This raised my responsibility and it is a patriot feeling that I will do something for them.

The key contest was the quarter-final for me in Amman and that was the door that I had to be opened for the glory. I competed in Amman in the front of the home crowd which was not so easy for me but I decided to attack and defense in the same time keeping on my strength and endurance. It was three rounds but I felt it really long.

My Asian Champion Uzbek semi-final opponent was strong and speed but I tried to do it even better in Amman. I was focused and enthusiasm which were the elements of my success and the support of my family and friends.

I will fight for the podium in the Tokyo Olympic Games. I won’t be going there just as a qualified athlete but also a contender for the medal. I want to prove that I am already a champion. Now being qualified for the Olympic Games, means that my journey has just begin. I realized that more is yet to come in my career,” summarized his feelings Jordan’s welterweight (69kg) boxer Zeyad Eshaish.
