Indonesia, host Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Singapore shared the titles at the Penang Pesta International Tournament

Indonesia, host Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Singapore shared the gold medals at the Penang Pesta International Tournament in the finals of the competitions. Malaysia’s Patricia Jaquilina Anak Bruce became the first ever female gold medallist in the Penang Pesta International Tournament.

The island of Penang is one of the boxing capitals in Malaysia, the region hosted several national competition and international events in the last decade. Seven women boxers were on the board of the Penang Pesta International Tournament for the very first time in the event’s history. The number of the male boxers was 65 and they can compete in 11 different weight categories in the picturesque island of Penang.

Patricia Jaquilina Anak Bruce trains in the Sarawak region and she earned the first historic female gold medal in the event. She had a tight 3:2 split decision triumph over Perak’s Yasmeen Najwa Binte Nazer Hamka at the women’s minimumweight (48kg). Engku Alesya Maisarah Binte Engku Alias from the Terengganu region earned the second female gold medal in the Penang Pesta.

Indonesia’s Marcelo Surati was too experienced for a local Penang-based boxer, Muhammad Mukhriz Khan in the finals of the men’s minimumweight (48kg), wining the bout by 4:1 split decision. His brother, Gilbert Natanael Surati bagged the second gold medal for the Indonesians, he defeated Sri Lanka’s Yasidu Premeratne at the men’s lightweight (60kg) final.  

Nepal’s Prabal Uprety eliminated Malaysia’s Hasan Bin Azan in the semi-finals of the flyweight (51kg), but he lost to Sri Lanka’s young talent, the 20-year-old Umayanga Pasidu Mihiran in the final. Sri Lanka’s next finalist, Heshan Jayasinghe was not able to repeat his semi-final performance and he was defeated by Indonesia’s national team member, Gianluigi Kalaipupin at the men’s light welterweight (63.5kg).

Muhammad Rizal Bin Wahid is one of the new talents in Penang who had a tight but successful bantamweight (54kg) final over Muhammad Aimar Risman Kopong. Nepal’s super talented 18-year-old Chhiring Wangdi Sherpa, a competitor from the ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships impressed at the men’s featherweight (57kg) in Penang but he had a narrow loss to an Indonesian boxer, Abdal Jabil Camis.  

Singapore’s lone gold medal was achieved by Aadhi Prahnavh who stopped Muhammad Syahrul Iqbal in the final of the light middleweight (71kg). The Malaysians dominated the heavier weight categories, Mohamed Hafiz Yuddin Bin Nordi (75kg), Muhammad Syahmin Bin Kauthar (80kg) and Danaraj Anantha Selvam (92kg) all won their finals.
