Men’s Lightweight class (60 kg):
Japan’s ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships bronze medallist Daisuke Narimatsu is a technician boxer who eliminated Venezuela’s Luis Cabrera in the first preliminary round on Day1. His second rival was United States’ Carlos Balderas who qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games from the World Series of Boxing and surprisingly defeated Kazakhstan’s Berik Abdrakhmanov in his first contest. The Japanese boxer moved ahead with his patient style but the US counter-attacks were successful in their contest therefore Narimatsu missed to advance to the last eight.
Uzbekistan’s current APB World Champion Hurshid Tojibaev returned to the Olympic Games after his first appearance in Beijing in 2008 when he was only 19. The Uzbek No.1 competed in the Olympic Test Event in Rio de Janeiro last December therefore he knew and felt the ring therefore he could beat his first opponent Qatar’s AIBA World Boxing Championships quarter-finalist Hakan Erseker easily in the first preliminary round. The 27-year-old Uzbek had to meet with Great Britain’s WSB hope and EUBC European Confederation Champion Joseph Cordina in a key contest today. The Uzbek hope had more experiences in the international level which was one of the main difference between them. Tojibaev was excellent in the final round and advanced to the quarter-finals in Rio de Janeiro.
Tajikistan’s AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medallist and ASBC Asian Champion Anvar Yunusov is competing in his third Olympic Games after Beijing and London. The Tajik veteran was too strong for China’s Shan Jun in his debuting contest but his second rival was a gold medal contender Brazil’s AIBA World Boxing Championships silver medallist Robson Donato Conceicao. Tajikistan’s veteran boxer had great movements in the opening round but Conceicao was too strong for the three-time Olympian Central Asian.
Mongolia’s Dorjnyambuu Otgondalai is the current Asian Games winner and ASBC Asian Confederation Champion who has got great target in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The 28-year-old Mongolian tried to keep the focus against Netherlands’ Enrico La Cruz who won the gold medal at the World Olympic Qualification Event. The Mongolian boxer was not enough concentrated in the first round but he found his best rhythm and combinations in time. Otgondalai won their close bout by split decision and advanced to the last eight and he needs only one further step to get a medal in Rio de Janeiro.
Thailand’s Amnat Ruenroeng returned from the professional world to the APB/WSB Olympic Qualification Event and did successful matches to qualify for the Games. The former AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medallist veteran had a strong second opponent in the Games France’s Sofiane Oumiha who was perfect this year. The Thai boxer had a few good attacks in the first round but the later actions were dominated by the 22-year-old French who advanced to the quarter-final.

Men’s Middleweight class (75 kg):
China’s Zhao Minggang surprised the world when he claimed silver medal at the AIBA Asian & Oceanian Olympic Qualification Event in Qian’an a few months ago. The Chinese Middleweight class (75 kg) boxer was too slow in the actions against Azerbaijan’s Kamran Shakhsuvarly and could not catch the European hope. The final verdict was unanimous decision to the Azeri boxer therefore Zhang have to travel back to home from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games without any success.
Iraq’s two-time ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships bronze medallist Waheed Abdulridha Waheed Karaawi opened with great punches against Mexico’s WSB talent Misael Rodriguez and took the lead after three minutes. The Iraqi boxer could not continue his rhythm in the second and third rounds therefore 22-year-old Rodriguez can prepares to the next preliminary round.
India’s former Asian Games winner and current ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships runner-up Vikas Krishan Yadav joined to the AIBA Pro Boxing this year and arrived to Rio de Janeiro as a medal contender. The 24-year-old Indian did not have an easy draw as he had to meet with United States’ AIBA American Olympic Qualification Event gold medallist Charles Conwell. Vikas Krishan delivered top performance and secured his place in the last 16 in Rio de Janeiro.
