India’s lone Tokyo Olympic Games bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain received a heroes’ welcome in Assam

India’s two-time AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain returned from the Tokyo Olympic Games to her homeland, the state of Assam. The 24-year-old boxer achieved bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games and received a heroes’ welcome in her state in India. The Secretary General of the Boxing Federation of India Mr. Hemanta Kumar Kalita also attended in the celebrations.

Chinese Taipei’s 2018 AIBA Women’s World Champion Chen Nien Chin was seeded at the women’s welterweight (69kg) and she defeated her Indian rival, Lovlina Borgohain in all of the previous international events. Chen, who competed already in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, had difficulties already in her first Olympic bout and she did not use the best strategy against the Indian boxer who arrived to Tokyo in top shape.

Both boxers were born in 1997 but the Asian boxers are highly experienced therefore the bout was a remarkable one. Borgohain exceeded all of the expectations and she eliminated Chinese Taipei’s pride in Tokyo advancing to the semi-finals in the Games. She became the only Indian boxer who earned a medal in the Tokyo Olympic Games which was another bronze in her career but at the highest level of boxing. Borgohain started her semi-final well against Turkey’s eventual winner Busenaz Surmeneli but her European rival found her best rhythm in time to beat the Indian.
