India’s Borgohain elected as chairwoman of IBA Athletes’ Committee

India’s welterweight star Lovlina Borgohain has been elected as the new chairwoman of the International Boxing Association (IBA) Athletes’ Committee, the world organizing body announced recently.

The 24-year-old Borgohain earned the highest number of votes from the registered boxers of various confederations who participated in the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships held last month in Istanbul, Turkey.

“I am delighted to be elected to this position of responsibility. I take immense pride in the fact that my fellow athletes believe that I can play a role in ensuring the athletes’ voices and ideas are heard. I look forward to working closely with IBA to inspire young athletes and fans around the world,” said Borgohain, a two-time bronze winner in the World Championships and Asian Championships as well as a bronze finisher in the Tokyo Olympics.

Serving as vice-chair of the committee is her fellow Indian standout Shiva Thapa, a former AIBA Junior world champion and a record holder in Asian Championships with five consecutive medals.

Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) president Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira expressed elation on the development and he strongly believes that the two Indian veterans will work hard to ensure that they fulfill their respective roles.

The other members of the IBA Athletes’ Committee are Ukraine’s Oleksandr Khyzhniak, Eswatini’s Thabiso Selby Dlamini, Australia’s Caitlin Parker, Italy’s Irma Testa, Morocco’s Oumayma Bel Ahbib, Brazil’s Abner Junior Teixeira and Samoa’s Ato Plodzicki Faoagali.

The term of the newly-elected Athletes’ Committee members will last until the World Boxing Championships in 2025.
