India, Kazakhstan claim 17 golds in Golden Gloves of Vojvodina

India and Kazakhstan copped a combined total of 17 out of the 25 gold medals in the recently concluded 40th Golden Gloves of Vojvodina Youth Tournament in Subotica, Serbia.

Reigning national champion Jadumani Singh Mandengbam and Asian titlist Ravina powered India’s 10-gold haul as they were hailed as “Best Fighter of the Tournament” and “Best Boxer” in the women’s category, respectively.

Jadumani capped his stellar run with a 4-1 victory over teammate Usman Mohamed Sultan Ansari in the men’s flyweight (51kg) final while Ravina routed Kazakhstan’s Assem Tanatar, 5-0, to punctuate her  women’s welterweight (63kg) campaign.

Female fighters Bhawna Sharma (minimum-48kg), Devika Satyajit Ghorpade (fly-52kg), Kunjarani Devi Thongam (light-60kg), Kirti (heavy-+81kg) and male pugs Vishvanath Suresh (minimum-48kg), Ashish (bantam-54kg), Sahil Chauhan (light middle-71kg), Bharat Jhoon (heavy-92kg) delivered the other golds for India.

Meanwhile, defending Asian women champs Ulzhan Sarsenbek and Bakhyt Seidish spearheaded Kazakhstan’s seven-gold harvest.

Sarsenbek drubbed Italy’s Luisa Acconcia, 5-0, in featherweight (57kg) while Seidish came through with a first-round stoppage against Bosnia & Herzegovina’s Amela Halilovic in welterweight (66kg).

Gaukhar Shaybekova (women’s light middle-70kg), Bakhtiyar Anarbayev (men’s light-60kg), Nurbek Mursal (welter-67kg), Islam Sovetov (light middle-71kg) and Daulet Tulemissov (middle-75kg) were the other winners from the Central Asian country.

India, Kazakhstan and Thailand joined the tournament as part of their preparations for the IBA Youth World Championships 2022 on November 13 to 27 in Alicante, Spain. The Asian bets went up against boxers from 18 nations across three confederations including Ukraine and the United States in this year’s edition of the traditional Serbian youth competition.
