Highlights of the ASBC National Federations – Macau achieved silver medal at the 2019 Indonesian President’s Cup

The Asian Boxing Confederation introduces the best moments of its affiliated Asian National Federations launching a new PR campaign, the Highlights of the ASBC National Federations. Macau is a small developing boxing country in East Asia but the country achieved a bronze at the 2005 Asian Women’s Boxing Championships and a silver medal at the 2019 Indonesian President’s Cup.

Choi Chui On became the country’s first elite boxer who could represent Macau in a big international event in 1994. He attended at the Tehran 1994 Asian Boxing Championships where he fought until the last gong against a strong South Korean, Kim Myung Hyun. Macau competed several editions of the ASBC Asian Boxing Championships in the recent two and half decades.

Leong Ka Seng and Sio Chi Hong represented Macau at the very first time in the history of the Asian Games in Bangkok in 1998. Macau sent boxers to all of the further editions of the Asian Games to Busan, to Doha, to Guangzhou, to Incheon and to the last Jakarta event which was held two years ago. Macau never won any contests yet in the history of the Asian Games but their boxers proved better and better performances step by step.

One of Macau’s top successes was achieved by Wong Sio Chao who claimed bronze medal at the bantamweight (54kg) of the Kaohsiung 2005 Asian Women’s Boxing Championships. She returned to the event three years later with three of her teammates but missed to get a new medal in Guwahati. The 2008 edition of the ASBC Asian Women’s Boxing Championships was Macau’s last participation in the female continental level.

Macau’s best male result was achieved by Leong Kin Fong at the 2019 Indonesian President’s Cup in Labuan Bajo. The young boxer advanced to the light welterweight (64kg) in the strong international event beating two opponents during his road to the final. Leong was defeated by only India’s ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships silver medallist Ankush Dahiya but his silver medal was an amazing success for Macau.

Their National Federation has got international event, the Macau Open Boxing Tournament and its last edition was held one year ago. Among the titleholders of the Macau Open Boxing Tournament only the best local hope Leong Kin Fong was able to manage to defend his throne in the event. The women boxers returned to the 2018 edition of the Macau Open Boxing Tournament and two weight classes were also in the official program of the new event in the city of Macau.
