Highlights of the ASBC National Federations – Iran topped the medal table in the Asian Boxing Championships twice in the 1970s

The Asian Boxing Confederation introduces the best moments of its affiliated Asian National Federations launching a new PR campaign, the Highlights of the ASBC National Federations. Iran was host of Asian Games, Asian Boxing Championships and Asian Youth Boxing Championships in their history. The country earned five titles in the boxing events of the Asian Games and topped the medal table of the Asian Boxing Championships twice.  

Iran competed first in the London 1948 Olympic Games where the country has done its debut with the participation of eight boxers. The Iranians competed 13-times in the boxing events of the Olympic Games but the country was not able to get a medal yet. Their best performance was quarter-final places in the recent editions therefore the President of the Iranian Boxing Federation Mr. Hossein Souri is planning to build up a strong team for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games to make that dream happened.

Iran is No.11 in the overall list of the Asian Games with 5 gold, 11 silver and 26 bronze medals in the history of the competition. The 42 Iranians medals in the boxing tournaments of the Asian Games is a strong commitment for the sport. The strong Iranians have done their debuts in the Asian Games in the 1958 Tokyo edition where their boxers three silver and three bronze medals.

Iran’s capital Tehran hosted the 1974 edition of the Asian Games where their boxers have done a great breakthrough with three gold medals. Sharif Delaram, Masis Hambarsumian and Abdol Reza Andaveh were their gold medallists in the Tehran 1974 Asian Games. Ayoub Purtaghi Ghoushchi won their fourth Asian Games title at the light heavyweight (81kg) in the Hiroshima 1994 edition. Their next title was achieved by Ali Mazaheri at the heavyweight (91kg) in the Doha 2006 Asian Games which is Iran’s last gold in the history of the event.

The first Iranian gold medal in the history of the Asian Boxing Championships was achieved by Nasser Aghai in the first 1963 edition in Bangkok. Iran achieved two titles in the Colombo 1967 Asian Boxing Championships which was their first event where their boxers achieved more than one gold medal.

Tehran hosted the Asian Boxing Championships twice in their history, firstly in 1971, secondly in 1994. Iran topped the medal table in the 1971 and in the 1977 Asian Boxing Championships. Their last gold medal in the Asian Boxing Championships was taken by Ali Mazaheri in Ulaanbaatar thirteen years ago. The Iranians attended many AIBA World Boxing Championships and AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships. Two of their boxers as Daniyal Shakhbakhsh and Seyed Shahin Mousavi have already qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games through the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event.
