Highlights of the ASBC National Federations – Indonesia achieved three Asian Games title and six gold medals in the history of the Asian Boxing Championships
The Asian Boxing Confederation introduces the best moments of its affiliated Asian National Federations launching a new PR campaign, the Highlights of the ASBC National Federations. Indonesia hosted the last edition of the Asian Games in 2018 but in the past their boxers’ golden era was in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Indonesia achieved three titles in the boxing history of the Asian Games and six gold medals in the Asian Boxing Championships between 1971 and 1992.
Indonesia competed first at the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 with three boxers and since then their fighters have been there and qualified nine-times. Indonesia’s last appearance in the boxing tournament of the Olympic Games was in the Athens 2004 edition when their current coach Bonyx Yusak Saweho could qualify at the flyweight (51kg).
The Indonesians achieved altogether three gold, eight silver and fifteen bronze medals in the history of the boxing events of the Asian Games. Their first gold medal in the Asian Games was achieved by Wiem Gommies at the middleweight (75kg) in the Bangkok 1970 edition 50 years ago. He returned to the top of the podium in the 1978 Asian Games after eight years of break and Gommies is the only Indonesian boxer who could win the multisport event two-times. Their last title in the Asian Games was taken by Pino Bahari also at the middleweight (75kg) in the Beijing 1990 edition.
Wiem Gommies was also the first Indonesian who won the title of the Asian Boxing Championships in 1971. Frans Van Bronckhorst bagged their second Asian title in 1973 which continental event was held in Bangkok. Jakarta hosted the 1977 Asian Boxing Championships and the country was able to get two gold medals at the very first time. Shyamsul Anwar Harahap and Benny Maniani won their weight classes in the 1977 edition.
Indonesia’s Ferry Moniaga continued their winning path in the Bombay 1980 Asian Boxing Championships. Hendrik Simangunsong won the light middleweight (71kg) in the Bangkok 1992 Asian Boxing Championships which was their last title in the event. Next to Hendrik Simangunsong, Nemo Bahari, Pino Bahari, Ballo Hermensen, Albert Papilaya and Masara Lapaene achieved several top successes for the Indonesians in the 1990s.
The Asian Women’s Boxing Championships has been launched in 2001 and Indonesia joined to the event in the 3rd edition which took place in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei in 2005. Among the Indonesian boxers Rumiris Simarmata (48kg) and Veronica Nicolas (50kg) won their two bronze medals in the history of the event in 2005. Indonesia hosted the last edition of the Asian Games in Jakarta in 2018 and their boxers returned to the podiums. Huswatun Hasanah claimed a surprise bronze medal at the women’s lightweight (60kg) while another young talent Sunan Agung Amoragam achieved also bronze at the men’s bantamweight (56kg) in the Jakarta 2018 Asian Games.
