Former AIBA Women’s Junior World Champion Vuong Thi Vy returned with a gold medal at the Vietnam Elite National Championships

The eleven women’s finals took place at the Vietnam Boxing Federation’s Elite National Championships in Bac Ninh province. Former AIBA Women’s Junior World Champion Vuong Thi Vy returned to the competitions after a break and she won her featherweight (57kg) final in the national event.

Vietnam Boxing Federation hosted their National Cup for the elite boxers earlier and the country continues its activities for them. Women or men boxers who were born between 1980 and 2001 were eligible to attend in the National Championships. The President of the Vietnam Boxing Federation Mr. Tran Minh Tien followed all of the competition days in Bac Ninh.

The competition was also a selection for the elite boxers before the World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event which will be held on June 2021. Vietnam achieved its first male quota place in the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event where Nguyen Van Duong achieved bronze medal and qualified for the Tokyo Olympics. Vietnam’s best boxer ASBC Asian Women’s Champion Nguyen Thi Tam did not qualify for the Games yet.

Altogether 62 female and 88 male boxers attended for the medals in the Vietnam Elite National Championships in Bac Ninh province. The most popular category among the girls is the lightweight (60kg) with the participation of 10 boxers.

Following Vuong Thi Huong’s first gold medal at the pinweight (45kg), Vietnam’s new sensation Nguyen Thi Kim Sang earned the second title of the National Championships. She caused one of the main sensations of the semi-finals of the light flyweight (48kg) when she eliminated Trinh Thi Diem Kieu. Nguyen Thi Kim Sang walked over to the gold medal against Hanoi’s Nguyen Thi Huong Giang and claimed her first big title.

Vietnam’s best female boxer Nguyen Thi Tam won the title at the 2017 ASBC Asian Women’s Boxing Championships and she claimed silver also in the last 2019 Bangkok edition. Nguyen Thi Tam dominated the women’s flyweight (51kg) against all of her opponents including Vu Thi Huong in the final.

Vo Thi Kim Anh became the champion of the bantamweight (54kg) after beating Chung Thuy My An in the final. Vuong Thi Vy was AIBA Women’s Junior World Champion nine years ago and claimed medals many international events including the 2017 ASBC Asian Women’s Boxing Championships. The 25-year-old featherweight (57kg) boxer decided to return after a short break and controlled her final against Hanoi’s Le Thi Oanh.

Dao Thi Hue dominated her contests during the road to the finals and she impressed also against Hanoi’s Do Thi Thuy taking the title of the women’s lightweight (60kg) in the National Championships. Tran Thi Linh moved down to the light welterweight (64kg) but she has done strong job against Tran Ngoc Anh whose ringside abandoned the fight.

ASBC Asian Women’s Youth Boxing Championships bronze medallist Hoang Ngoc May had a strong final against Haiphong’s AIBA Women’s Youth World Boxing Championships competitor, Do Thi Mai and won the important title of the welterweight (69kg). The middleweight (75kg) gold medal was achieved by national team member Tran Thi Oanh Nhi.
