Bhavesh Kattimani and Selay Soy were the main stars of the Indian Youth National Championships in Rudrapur

The Indian Youth National Championships was held in the city of Rudrapur where ten champions have been crowned. India’s most experienced boxers in this age group as AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Bhavesh Kattimani, Selay Soy, L. Bilotson Singh, Vijay Deep, Harsh Gill and Aman all shined in Rudrapur.
India has been preparing to the upcoming ASBC Asian Confederation Youth Boxing Championships which is scheduled to be held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on November. The Indian Youth National Championships was their main selection competition before the start of their international participations.
Boxers who were born in 2001 and in 2002 were eligible to attend in the Indian Youth National Championships in Rudrapur. The team of SSCB claimed nine out of the ten gold medals in the Indian Youth National Championships while the last one was captured by the strong Haryana region.
Selay Soy was quarter-finalist in the Puerto Princesa 2017 ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships in the Philippines but before that continental event he was unbeaten in all national events. Soy is now at the youth age group who controlled all of his fights with his world class footwork in Rudrapur including the final of the light flyweight (49kg) against Uttar Pradesh’s Junior National Champion Manish Rathore.
Bhavesh Kattimani achieved bronze medal in the Bangkok ASBC Asian Confederation Youth Boxing Championships and also at the Budapest 2018 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships making himself as India’s top youth boxer. The 18-year-old flyweight (52kg) star defeated Haryana’s Ankit in the final of the Youth National Championships getting ready before the main international events.
India’s 2018 Junior National Champion L. Bilotson Singh moved down to the bantamweight (56kg) and won his first youth title following his success over Bullen Buragohain. Another 2018 Junior National Champion Ajay Kumar joined to the youth age group this January and defeated the main favourite of the lightweight (60kg), ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships bronze medallist Ankit Narwal in the final. Junior Nations Cup silver medallist Akash Gorkha claimed only bronze in Rudrapur.
Junior National Championships runner-up Rajat Punia shocked ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships bronze medallist Akshay Kumar in the final of the light welterweight (64kg) capturing the gold in Rudrapur. Junior National Champion Vijay Deep qualified for the Budapest 2018 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships where he reached the Top 16 last August therefore his triumph over Sumit was an expected result.
Harsh Choudhary achieved bronze in the 2017 Indian Junior National Championships but he has changed it into gold in Rudrapur where he was too smart for Delhi’s Hemant Yadav. Lakshya Chahar lost to Haryana’s ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships silver medallist Mohit in the final of the 2017 Indian Junior National Championships but in Rudrapur he has done revenge and took the title of the light heavyweight (81kg).
Haryana’s lone gold medal in the whole Indian Youth National Championships was achieved by 17-year-old Harsh Gill who defeated Delhi’s Harsh Rana in the final while SSCB’s ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships silver medallist Satender Singh achieved only bronze medal. The title of the super heavyweight (+91kg) went to Aman who was slightly better than Haryana’s Jugnoo in the final.
