Aye Aye Pyae and Gin Sin Maung received the best boxers’ trophies at the Myanmar Divisions and States Boxing Championships

The Myanmar Boxing Federation’s important selection event, the Divisions and States National Boxing Championships was held in Nay Pyi Taw. A multiple champion, Aye Aye Pyae was named as the Best Woman Boxer of the Championships while Gin Sian Maung received the Best Male Boxer Trophy.

The competition was the main event in Myanmar in 2023 where the total number of elite boxers was 150 and among them 18 boxers took their gold medals in the finals. The number of the women boxers was 47, joining them 103 male athletes in this national event.

The women boxers were able to compete at the pinweight (46kg), minimumweight (48kg), light flyweight (50kg), flyweight (52kg), bantamweight (54kg), featherweight (57kg), lightweight (60kg) and light welterweight (63kg).

The male boxers competed at the minimumweight (48kg), flyweight (51kg), bantamweight (54kg), featherweight (57kg), lightweight (60kg), light welterweight (63.5kg), welterweight (67kg), light middleweight (71kg), middleweight (75kg) and light heavyweight (80kg) in the upcoming day.

Their President Mr. Kyaw Kyaw Soe and their Vice-President Mr. Aung Naing followed and watched the bouts at the Divisions and States Boxing Championships. Myanmar claimed one silver and two bronze medals in the 2022 edition of the Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam and their nine-strong team earned six bronze medals in the 2023 SEA Games in Phnom Penh this year. 

Aye Aye Mu won the first female final in the national event, she defeated Pyae Sone Win at the women’s pinweight (46kg). Aye Aye Pyae delivered the best female performance in Nay Pyi Taw, she dominated all of her contests including the final of the light flyweight (50kg) against Pa Pa Win.

Aye Thiri Kyaw was another strong girl in the national event, her opponent, Saung Hnin Phyu, abandoned their unequal final contest in the second round at the flyweight (52kg). A classic KO is rare in women’s boxing but Htet Htet Win landed a lethal shot in the final of the bantamweight (54kg) against Naw Htoo Hwal Phaw still in the first round.

The smaller weight categories are stronger in Myanmar, Myo Zarni Htet had a tough contest against Aung Aung Tun in the final of the men’s minimumweight (48kg). Gin Sin Maung was one of the most technician boxers in this event, he defeated Shine Nge at the featherweight (57kg). Aye Ko Zin exceeded the expectations in the final of the men’s lightweight (60kg) when he triumphed over the experienced Htun Linn.
