Asians tally strong start in Bocskai Tournament

National standouts from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Thailand came through with triumphant debuts in the 67th Ivstan Bocskai Memorial Tournament in Debrecen, Hungary.

Reigning youth world champion Turabek Khabibullayev of Uzbekistan landed solid body shots to knock Austria’s Marcel Meinl out in the second round of their men’s light heavyweight (80kg) bout.

Fellow Uzbek star and defending Asian youth titlist Rakhmatullo Boymatov disposed of Croatian veteran Damir Plantic with a 4-1 victory in the same weight class.

Former youth world champ Nurbek Oralbay of Kazakhstan notched a hard-earned 4-1 win against ex-Bocksai tourney winner George Crotty of England in light heavyweight as well.

Kazakhstan’s former Asian youth champion Samatali Toltayev sneaked past Poland’s Ilia Bader, 3-2, in lightweight (60kg) while ex-Asian elite winner Rimma Volosenko also trounced a Polish pug in Julia Szeremeta, 5-0, in women’s lightweight (60kg).

Another Kazakh female boxer in Saniya Sultankyzy pulled off a 4-1 stunner over World Championship silver medalist Asya Ari of Germany in featherweight (57kg).

Asian U22 champion and Tokyo Olympics campaigner Baison Manikon gave Thailand a headstart in the international tourney after crushing Australia’s newcomer Lekeisha Pergoliti, 5-0, in women’s middleweight (75kg).
