Asian youth champ Orozbekov shines in Akelbayev tilt

Kyrgyzstan’s reigning Asian youth champion Almaz Orozbekov punched his way to the gold medal in the light welterweight (63.5kg) division of the Kenzhebek Akelbayev Prizes Tournament that concluded recently after five days of action-packed competition in the Kyrgyz town of Balykchy.

Orozbekov, who grabbed the lightweight (60kg) title in the ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships 2022 held in Amman, Jordan last March, dictated the rhythm against the 2021 silver winner Omar Livaza to come out victorious in their highly-anticipated title bout despite moving up a weight class.

Bekzat Ergeshov (minimum-48kg), Atay Asanbekov (middle-75kg), Argen Baktybekov (heavy-92kg) of Kyrgyzstan and Jamoliddin Kozokov (cruiser-86 kg) of Uzbekistan were the other ASBC medalists who lorded over their respective weight divisions.

A total of 124 youth boxers and 149 junior fighters showcased their wares in the major Central Asian tournament organized by the Kyrgyz Boxing Federation.

The Akelbayev tilt served as one the selection tourneys for the upcoming IBA Youth Men’s & Women’s World Boxing Championships scheduled on November 13 to 27 in Alicante, Spain.
