ASBC President Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira congratulates to the new ABAP President Mr. Robbie Puno

The Asian Boxing Confederation has welcomed the recent election of Rep. Robbie Puno as President of the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP).

Puno, who represents the First District of Antipolo, a city of 887,399 located east of Manila, replaced long-time ABAP Secretary General and later President Mr. Ed Picson, who passed away on April.

The entire Asian Boxing Confederation management, led by ASBC President Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira, said it is looking forward to working closely with Mr. Puno in promoting plans and programs of ASBC.

Concurrently the Vice-Chairman of the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas member and a member of the Board of Trustees of the MVP Sports Foundation, Mr. Puno stepped into the vacated post and immediately met with ABAP’s pool of boxers at their training facility in Baguio City.

Joining him at the Teachers Camp venue were former ABAP President and now Chairman Mr. Ricky Vargas and ABAP Secretary General Mr. Marcus Manalo.

Mr. Puno vowed to continue the programs set up by his predecessor and promised the assembled national boxers and coaches that he will make use his legislative functions to help uplift their lives and that of their families.

The five-term Congressman also guested at the weekly Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum and outlined in general terms ABAP’s mission from when Mr. Vargas assumed the Presidency in 2009.

“Our marching orders from our Chairman now is to accomplish the promise he made when he became President in 2009 that ABAP will go through three cycles of the Olympics, and in the fourth Olympic cycle in Paris, we will win the gold,” Puno said.

The French capital will host the XXXIII Olympiad next year, with the Philippines hoping to send to Paris, among other boxers, Tokyo Olympic silver medallists, Carlo Paalam and Nesthy Petecio, and bronze medal winner Eumir Felix Marcial.

“We are now preparing for the Olympic Qualifiers in the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China in September,” said Puno. “Winning the gold medal in Paris is really our intention,”

A healthy grassroots development program to discover fresh talent and to augment the national pool is likewise a top priority during his Presidency, the new ABAP chef added.
