ASBC Future Stars – Yemen’s Sil Ghaleb Mohammad Al-Qarnas who made history for the country several times

Yemen’s best hope Sil Ghaleb Mohammad Al-Qarnas is only 20-year-old but he is the country’s No.1 and trains hard to the upcoming events in spite of the difficulties which affected his preparations in the recent half year. The Asian Boxing Confederation’s new PR campaign, the ASBC Future stars have been introducing the continent’s best hopes and young talents focusing to the new wave of the boxers.

Yemen’s No.1 Sil Ghaleb Mohammad Al-Qarnas was born in the city of Raimah on August 7 in 2000. He began his boxing career in 2011 at the age of 11 and trains with coach Faisal Ali Saleh Al-Husaini at the Al-Shurta Boxing Club. His boxing idol is Yemen’s UK-based former professional star Prince Naseem Hamed, one of the most popular sportsman of the country.

Yemen sent boxers to the 2016 Children of Asia Games where their young talents showed their potential. Sil Ghaleb Mohammad Al-Qarnas was quarter-finalist in the Children of Asia Games in Yakutsk, Russia and lost to only South Korea’s Lee So Min.

Yemen has done a big sensation in the 2017 edition of the Arab Youth Championships in Cairo where their youth No.1 Sil Ghaleb Mohammad Al-Qarnas defeated all of his rivals and won the gold medal in the light flyweight (49kg). The Yemeni boxer delivered a historical first gold medal for his developing boxing country after beating his Moroccan and Algerian rivals in Cairo.

Yemen made its debut in the ASBC Asian Confederation Youth Boxing Championships in 2017 and their Ghaleb Mohammed Al-Qarnas made historical success on Day1. He started his bout in confident style against Chinese Taipei’s Chiu Yen Tsu and in spite of his difficulties in the second round he came back in the third with good counter-attacks and won their contest by split decision which was Yemen’s first ever victory in the history of the ASBC Asian Confederation Youth Boxing Championships. Al-Qarnas lost to China’s Guo Tianyi in the quarter-finals but proved his amazing talent in Bangkok.

Sil Ghaleb Mohammad Al-Qarnas returned to the Arab Youth Boxing Championships in 2018 and attended at the flyweight (52kg) in Cairo. The 17-year-old Yemeni boxer defeated Morocco’s Bader Berhili in the semi-final of the new edition but Tunisia’s Mohamed Aziz Jouini was too strong for him which meant he claimed silver medal in Cairo.

He won the 2019 Leader Championships in Al-Baqaa, Jordan and attended at the Bangkok 2019 ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships. Al-Qarnas won three contests in the last Yemeni National Championships and won the title of the flyweight (52kg). He has been focusing to qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games which is his next goal in his career.
