Anupama, Thisantha and Mihiran earned titles in the Sri Lankan Junior National Trials

The Sri Lankan Junior National Trials was held before the start of the ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships. Passaperuma Hashini Anupama is only a 14-year-old female talent but she won her weight class in the Junior National Trials while Matharage Suraj Thisantha and G.K. Pasindu Umayanga Mihiran impressed in the male part of the event.

The Sri Lankan management will be sending eight boxers to the upcoming ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships to Fujairah, United Arab Emirates. The continental event will be starting with its first competition day on October 10 and Sri Lanka is planning to do a few surprises in Fujairah.

The President of the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka Mr. Dian Gomes has been working hard to build up a strong team to the upcoming 2022 Commonwealth Games. The winners of the Junior National Trials have been selected to attend in the continental event. The women boxers could attend in four weight classes while the male juniors competed also in four divisions.

Passaperuma Hashini Anupama will be turning to 15 only in the end of December but she amazed in the final of the women’s pinweight (46kg). She began boxing only two and half years ago in Matara which is located in the South part of the country but she needed only less than one round to beat Wasundara Jayasingha in the final.

B.H. Kawumini Sewwandi of Gamini Central College is a bit more experienced than Anupama and she also won her light flyweight (48kg) final by RSC over Roshini Himasha. Following K.D.C.G. Kavinddiya Kulathunga’s success at the flyweight (50kg), Matara’s second gold medal in the women’s part of the Trials was achieved by Jasenthu Kankanamge Vishni Nethara who dominated her final at the light bantamweight (52kg).

Vidyarathna Sport Club’s Matharage Suraj Thisantha turned to 16 only in the recent days and he had hard road to the title of the male pinweight (46kg). Thisantha was slightly better than three of his opponents but he managed his success to get the gold medal in the Trials winning the final against Widana Pathiran by split decision.

Sumangala’s Y. Mohommed Hosen Usaith will be celebrating his 15th birthday by the time of the ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships. The Horana-based boxer has got already four years of experiences in our sport who had also tough fights as Matharage Suraj Thisantha but he had the stamina to beat E.M.D.S. De Seram in the final of the light flyweight (48kg).

Vidyarathna Sport Club’s Junior National Champion G.K. Pasindu Umayanga Mihiran was the most experienced boxer at the flyweight (50kg) who defeated Waruna Bandara in the final of the Junior National Trials. The fourth gold medal in the male part of the Trials was won by H.M.U.S. Ushan Karunanayake who also represents the Vidyarathna Sport Club and stopped R.G.K. Vishwa in the final of the light bantamweight (52kg).
