Amit, Thapa banner eight-strong Indian men’s team for Commonwealth Games

National stars Amit Panghal and Shiva Thapa buckled down to work and came out triumphant in the finals of the India Men’s National Selection Trials for the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2022 held recently at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports in Patiala.

Amit, the reigning Asian Games champion as well as a former silver winner in the World Championships and a multi-medalist in the Asian Championships, pulled off a split decision victory against his fierce rival Deepak Kumar in the light flyweight (51kg) category.

On the other hand, Thapa, a record holder in Asian Championships for bagging five consecutive medals and a bronze medalist in World Championships in 2015, toppled fellow world bronze finisher Manish Kaushik in the light welterweight (63.5kg) division.

Six other boxers secured their spots in the Indian national boxing team that will compete in this year’s Commonwealth Games including 2018 bronze winner Mohammad Hussamuddin who nipped another veteran Kavinder Singh Bisht in featherweight (57kg).

Rohit Tokas (welter-67k), Sumit Kundu (middle-75kg), Ashish Kumar (light heavy-80kg), Sanjeet (92kg-heavy) and Sagar (+92kg-super heavy) ruled their respective weight classes. The Boxing Federation of India will aim to improve its three-gold haul from the previous edition in 2018 when it sends its top male and female elite pugilists next month in Birmingham, England.
