AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Liu Piaopiao won the 2nd Qualifier for the Chinese National Games

The Chinese National Games will be one of the highlights for their boxers this year which event is scheduled to be held in September and its second Qualifying Event was held in Baoan. All of the boxers must be qualified for the National Games through regional and qualifying boxing events. The biggest name among the female winners was AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Liu Piaopiao.

The Chinese National Games holds every four years in the month of September and the agenda of the multisport event contains various sports including boxing. The last edition of the Chinese National Games was held in 2017 short after the Hamburg AIBA World Boxing Championships. Their women boxers used the 2017 Chinese National Games as preparations for the ASBC Asian Women’s Boxing Championships.

The first qualifying round was held in the city of Chongqing where 184 elite female boxers competed for the medals and the quota places for the National Games. The second qualifying competition took place in Baoan at the Shenzhen Province while their best women boxers have been preparing hard to the Olympic Games.

The second qualifying round was held in five different women weight categories and 75 boxers competed in Baoan. The first gold medal of the qualifying round was achieved by Nie Yuan of Hubei at the flyweight (51kg) who defeated four rivals including Fu Tingting of Guangxi in the final. The final verdict was split decision and Nie Yuan proved strong technical performance in the competition.

Shanxi’s Liu Piaopiao claimed bronze medal at the bantamweight (54kg) in the 2016 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships and competed two editions of the ASBC Asian Women’s Boxing Championships in 2015 and in 2017. Liu moved up to the featherweight (57kg) and she produced a fantastic performance in the Qualifier, her stamina was enough to eliminate Cai Yan of Jilin.

Shanghai’s Zhang Rong claimed the next gold medal of the competition who defeated Zheng Rong of Fujian in the final of the lightweight (60kg) while one of the favourites, Chen Yibing achieved only bronze in Baoan. Zhang Rong won the crucial semi-final by split decision but her final opponent’s ringside abandoned their contest.

Shanxi’s second gold medal in the Qualifier was taken by Yuan Haini at the welterweight (69kg) in Baoan. Thirteen boxers attended in the weight class and Yuan Haini had enough experiences to beat Yuan Huiping of Guangxi in the final. Nine boxers competed at the middleweight (75kg) in Baoan where Gansu’s Ulaanbaatar Box Cup quarter-finalist Zhou Pan defeated ASBC Asian Women’s Youth Boxing Championships bronze medallist 20-year-old Buridu of Hubei in the final.
