Afghanistan’s potential future stars arise in Hameedi tourney

A bright future for Afghanistan boxing awaits as young fighters showed a glimpse of their potential in the Shaheed Hameedullah Hameedi Memorial Tournament that concluded recently in the capital city of Kabul.

A total of 22 teenage boxers–nine from the junior age group and 13 from the youth division–emerged as champions in the second national competition bravely hosted by the Afghanistan Boxing Federation this year despite the challenges within the country.

More than 100 young talents from 11 regional associations and clubs joined the tilt launched by Afghanistan Boxing Federation president Abdullah Sattari in honor of the late former secretary general.

The tournament featured all nine junior weight classes from pin (46kg) to heavy (80kg+) as well as all 13 youth weight divisions from minimum (48kg) to super heavy (92kg+).

After competing in the 2018 and 2019 editions of the ASBC Asian Youth Championships, Afghanistan is eyeing to send a strong contingent to upcoming international competitions.
