Activities abound on International Boxing Day

Various activities, social programs, educational projects and special training sessions are expected to be held in celebration of the International Boxing Day on August 27.

Kinshasa, the capital city of Democratic Republic Congo, will serve as the center of this year’s festivities, including six exhibition bouts and meet-and-greet with several African boxing stars.

The event will be graced by International Boxing Association (IBA) president Umar Kremlev, who pioneered the celebration of Boxing Day in his home country of Russia before it became a special day worldwide.

Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) President Pichai Chunhavajira of Thailand will also attend the occasion in Kinshasa and urges the affiliated Asian national federations to join in commemorating this day dedicated to the sweet science.

Developing boxing countries in Asia such as Iran, Pakistan, and Palestine have lined up commendable projects and programs on International Boxing Day.

Moved from July 22 to August 27 in 2021, the International Boxing Day marks the inaugural staging of the World Boxing Championships in Havana, Cuba back in 1974.

Last year, more than 50 national federations across the globe joined IBA in celebrating the significant day. Many of them hosted open-air and online training sessions while others organized community-based events such as Nepal which hosted a mass blood donation drive and street-cleaning effort.
