Veteran boxers defended their titles in the new edition of the Bangladesh National Championships

The Bangladesh National Championships for their elite female and male boxers were held in the capital city in Dhaka. Six female and thirteen male boxers won the national titles and among them several athletes remained on the top of the podium. Among the titleholders, experienced Mohammed Sojib Hossain, Mohammad Al-Amin and Mohamed Abdur Rahim won their weight classes.

The National Championships was used as selection event before the main objectives for them such as the upcoming Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and South Asian Games. The Army boxers have got strong traditions in the national event and their hopes shined in the competition once again.

Bangladesh sent their team to the 2019 South Asian Games which was one of the most important competitions for them in the recent years. Bangladesh competed at the CISM Military World Boxing Championships in Moscow, Russia which was their comeback to the events during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bangladesh’s best women boxers attended first at the 2016 South Asian Games and their ladies made their next debut at the 2018 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in India. Following a few women’s national events, Jannatul Ferdows won the first title in the new edition achieving the title of the minimumweight (48kg) after beating CISM World Military Boxing Championships competitor Mst. Nurunnahar.

Kaima Khatun claimed the second gold medal in the women’s part of the competition at the light flyweight (50kg). Shahara Eysmin defeated Sania Sultana before Mehjabin Ara Jamuna made a fantastic surprise when she triumphed over experienced national team member Shamima Akhtar. AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships competitor Onita Islam (57kg) and Sakhi Akhtar (60kg) earned the remaining female titles in Dhaka.

Mohamed Sojib Hossain represented Bangladesh at the 2019 South Asian Games and he had all of the experiences to win the title of the men’s minimumweight (48kg). Abu Talha achieved silver medal at the 2017 Bangladesh Junior National Championships and the young boxer won his first ever elite title in the new edition after beating Abir Rahman at the flyweight (51kg).

Following Ruhin Reza’s gold medal at the bantamweight (54kg), Mohamed Salim Hossain caused a sensation at the featherweight (57kg) where he defeated South Asian Games competitor Mohamed Robin Mia in the final. Sura Krishna Chakma won the lightweight (60kg) as favourite while Rakib Sheikh earned his first big title during his career.

Mohammad Al-Amin has got more than ten years of experiences in the national team therefore he was able to beat Mojahid Haque in the final of the welterweight (67kg). Mohammed Abdur Rahim is also an experienced veteran who controlled his light middleweight (71kg) final against Kazi Faisal.

Mohammad Arif Hossain defeated Rahad Ali in the final of the middleweight (75kg) while another veteran South Asian Games winner Muhammad Jewel Ahmed Jony won the title of the light heavyweight (80kg). Shuvo Kumar Vaduri (86kg), Sahriar Shanto (92kg) and Mehedi Hasan (+92kg) won the remaining gold medals in the National Championships.
