7 years ago on this day – Ten exciting finals were held at the 2013 ASBC Asian Boxing Championships in Amman

The 2013 edition of the ASBC Asian Men’s Elite Boxing Championships finished on this day seven years ago in Amman, Jordan which was a big comeback for the Western Asian region. The final number of the entered athletes was 153 male boxers from 27 nations from each part of the Asian continent.

The Asian Boxing Confederation’s Men’s Elite Championships had 10 exciting final contests in the capital city of Jordan where Kazakhstan bagged record number of seven gold medals. Temirtas Zhusupov (49kg), Berik Abdrakhmanov (60kg), Merey Akshalov (64kg), Daniyar Yeleussinov (69kg), Zhanibek Alimkhanuly (75kg), Anton Pinchuk (91kg) and Ivan Dychko (+91 kg) were their gold medallists.

Kazakhstan’s Asian Games winner Daniyar Yeleussinov was one of the most promising fighter in the world in 2013 and following some unexpected losses in different tournaments, he repeated his previous performance in his new weight division. The Astana-based 22-year-old welterweight (69kg) fighter was too quick for AIBA Team’s new hope Mandeep Jangra who was tough but he still needs to be raised his experiences in the international level. Yeleussinov secured his first ever gold medal in the ASBC Asian Boxing Championships and it was his opening success before the Almaty AIBA World Boxing Championships.

Kyrgyzstan’s multiple National Champion, Shopokov Tournament winner team captain Azat Usenaliev fought against Uzbekistan’s AIBA Asian Olympic Qualifiers bronze medallist Shakhobiddin Zoirov in the final of the flyweight (52kg) which was an amazing battle in Amman.  The Kyrgyz boxer used his own tactic and tried to play with his great footwork in the final against his tough and younger opponent. Usenaliev’s combinations reached the target many times and dominated the second and the final rounds against Zoirov. Usenaliev’s final triumph meant Kyrgyzstan secured its first ever gold medal in the history of the ASBC Asian Boxing Championships.

India could attend in the event under the AIBA flag and their Youth Olympic Games silver medallist and AIBA Asian Olympic Qualifier winner Shiva Thapa impressed in that championship. He travelled to Amman as a favourite of the bantamweight (56kg) division where he accomplished his goals. The Indian boxer was too strong and technician to Jordan’s first finalist in the last competition day, Obada Al-Kasbeh who was only 19 and joined to the national elite squad in 2012. Shiva Thapa reached his target in Amman and became the first Indian gold medallist in the championships.

Jordan’s national boxing hero London 2012 Olympian and AIBA Asian Olympic Qualifiers bronze medallist Ihab Al-Matbouli injured during the semi-finals but he wanted to get the gold on home soil. His final opponent was Kazakhstan’s University World Champion Anton Pinchuk who did his best performance during the gold medal contest in Amman. The referee counted twice to the host nation’s boxer in the opening round but he did not give up the battle and won the last one. Al-Matbouli’s efforts were enough for a silver medal which was his career highlight for him but he was not that satisfied with the result.

In the final bout of the whole championships, Kazakhstan’s London 2012 Olympic Games bronze medallist Ivan Dychko faced with Uzbekistan’s AIBA Asian Olympic Qualifiers bronze medallist Izatullo Ergashev. The Kazakh super heavyweight (+91kg) boxer was too strong for his promising Uzbek opponent and Dychko’s triumph resulted the seventh gold medal for Kazakhstan which was record in the history of the ASBC Asian Boxing Championships.
