299 boxers join Uzbekistan elite championships

Big names are set for a grand comeback as 299 boxers slug it out in the Uzbekistan Elite National Championships this year in the capital city of Tashkent.

Former world champion, Tokyo Olympics gold medalist and three-time ASBC Asian elite titlist Bakhodir Jalolov returns from professional boxing as he joins the men’s super heavyweight (+92kg) class.

Ex-world and Asian elite winner Mirazizbek Mirzakhalilov, who is also a reigning Asian Games champ, goes back from the professional scene as well to fight in the featherweight (57kg) division.

Two-time ASBC titlist Nodirjon Mirzakhmedov is also expected to compete again in minimumweight (48kg).

A total of 215 men and 84 women pugilists from different cities and regions enlisted for the national championships, with the men’s light welterweight (63.5kg) category having the most participants at 26.

Featuring all the official 13 weight divisions for men and 12 for women, the Uzbekistan Elite National Championships will serve as one of the vital selections for the IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships in Tashkent.

The first competition day of the Uzbekistan Elite National Championships contained 48 preliminary contests in Tashkent. Eight female contests were scheduled in the first session of the national event and 40 preliminary battles among the male boxers.

Veteran officials Mr. Andrew Caulfield of Scotland and Mr. Zoltan Szalma of Hungary will serve as the Observer and Evaluator, respectively. Several neutral referees from Asia and Europe will also work in the competition.
