Yangon hosted the Myanmar National Boxing Championships

Yangon hosted the Myanmar National Boxing Championships which was the biggest event in the Southeast Asian Country. Their top women boxers such as Nelly Bawy Nei Sin, Htet Htet Khaing Oo and New Ni Oo won their weight classes while Wai Phyo Tun and Aung Shwe Mon were their bests in the men part of the event.
Five weight classes were scheduled for the women elite boxers from the light flyweight (48kg) up to the lightweight (60kg) in the National Boxing Championships while the men athletes could compete in seven categories from the light flyweight (49kg) up to the middleweight (75kg) in Yangon.
Myanmar hosted the 2013 edition of the Southeast Asian Games in Nay Pyi Taw where the country claimed medals and proved their woman’s boxing has go potential. Myanmar sent boxers also to the 2015 Southeast Asian Games to Singapore and the management of their National Boxing Federation is planning to compete in more events in the near future.
The first gold medal of the Myanmar National Boxing Championships was delivered by Nelly Bawy Nei Sin who competed in the 2011 AIBA Women’s Youth World Boxing Championships in Antalya. The 23-year-old light flyweight (48kg) boxer is one of the best female athlete in Myanmar who was able to beat Ni Ni Ko in the final of the event.
Kayin State’s Myanmar State & Divisional Boxing Championships gold medallist and National Champion Htet Htet Khaing Oo dominated her final against Yin Yin Aung at the Women’s bantamweight (54kg) and defended her throne. She was able to win her second national title in the year and has got chance to represent Myanmar in the international competitions in 2017.
Nwe Ni Oo claimed the title in the 2015 Myanmar National Sports Festival at the Women’s bantamweight (54kg) but since then she moved up to the featherweight (57kg). Home Affairs’ boxer had to meet in the final with Bago Division’s State & Divisional Boxing Championships winner Naw Ohmar Soe and following her great performance she was able to beat her experienced rival in Yangon.
Yangon Institute of Sport and Physical Education boxer Mar Yee Nar and Shan State’s Ba Yaw Ni Kar won the two Olympic women weight classes in the Myanmar National Boxing Championships. Mar defeated Taninthayi Division’s Aye Nyein Htoo in the final of the flyweight (51kg) while Ba was too strong for Home Affairs’ Nge War Oo in the gold medal bout of the lightweight (60kg).
Wai Phyo Tun won the title in the flyweight (52kg) at the 2015 Myanmar National Sports Festival but this time he moved back to his original category to the light flyweight (49kg). The young talent controlled his final bout against National Champion and National Sports Festival winner 20-year-old Wai Lin Aung which was one of the most spectacular contest of the whole National Championships.
Three further male boxers defended their thrones in Myanmar in the National Championships: Maw Kyune Club’s Naing Latt at the bantamweight (56kg), North Ohkalar Quarter’s Kyaw Kyaw Htet at the lightweight (60kg) and Army boxer Myo Kyaw Thu at the welterweight (69kg). Each of them have rivals from the Army in their finals but they could solve their tactical issues in the gold medal bouts.
Aung Shwe Mon secured national titles at the light heavyweight (81kg) in the recent years but this time he defeated all of his rivals at the middleweight (75kg) including Hnin Wai in the gold medal bout. He has been boxing for the Sports & Physical Education Training Institute of Yangon in the national level since 2010. Following the State & Divisional Boxing Championships he was able to win his second national title in 2016.
