Yang, other Asians dominate in World Championships Day 3

China’s national standout Yang Liu eliminated a top contender while other Asian stars also impressed on the third day of the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships 2023 in New Delhi, India.

The World Championships 2019 silver medalist Liu simply outclassed former world titlist and reigning ASBC Asian elite champ Chen Nien-chin of Chinese Taipei, 5-0, in their marquee welterweight (66kg) bout.

Kazakhstan’s defending Asian champion and last year’s world silver winner Alua Balkybekova proved she’s one of the title favorites in the minimumweight (48kg) class, posting a 5-0 romp over Singapore’s Chee Wai Kei Wann.

Fellow Kazakh and Asian champ Zhaina Shekerbekova dictated the tempo against South Korea’s Tokyo Olympian Im Ae Ji en route to a 4-1 victory in the bantamweight (54kg) division.

India’s former two-time youth world titlist and Commonwealth Games 2022 gold medalist Nitu Ghanghas came through with a sensational first-round stoppage against South Korea’s Kang Do Hyeon in minimumweight.

Japan’s two-time world bronze finisher Madoka Wada crushed Chinese Taipei’s Chien Ling, 5-0, while Uzbekistan’s Asian U22 champion Farzona Fozilova pummelled Italy’s Roberta Bonatti with the same score in minimumweight as well.

Thailand’s Jutamas Jitpong, a silver medalist last year in Istanbul, overwhelmed Nepals’ Minu Gurung, 5-0, even as Chinese Taipei’s Olympic bronze winner Huang Hsiao Wen stopped Turkey’s Nilay Yaren Cam in the third round in bantamweight. Uzbekistan’s ex-youth world and Asian winner Nigina Uktamova, and Mongolia’s Asian U22 titlist Enkhjargal Munguntsetseg also advanced to the next round in the bantamweight category.
