World champs shine on Day 2 of Elorda Cup

Reigning world titlists Termitas Zhussupov, Saken Bibossinov, Sewon Okazawa and Gitika hurdled their respective opening assignments on the second day of the 1st Elorda Cup in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.

AIBA World Boxing Championships 2021 minimumweight (48kg) gold medalist Zhussupov of Kazakhstan easily earned the nod of all judges over a familiar foe in Mirlan Turkbay of Kyrgyzstan.

Another hometown star Bibossinov dictated the rhythm against 19-year-old countryman Kenzhe Muratuly until the final bell in their preliminary flyweight (52kg) bout.

Japan’s world welterweight champion Okazawa moved up to light middleweight (71kg) division but remained dominant as he trounced Kazakhstan’s Armat Armanuly.

For her part, India’s 19-year-old youth world winner Gitika delivered a superb performance over Akbota Bolat of Kazakhstan in the women’s minimumweight (48kg) class.

Meanwhile, former world champion Wang Lina of China eliminated Zhibek Zharaskyzy of Kazakhstan in women’s light heavyweight (81kg) even as Asian youth titlist Farzona Fozilova of Uzbekistan also beat a hometown bet in Roksana Gassymova in women’s minimumweight.

The Elorda Cup, which is the new premier international tournament organized by the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation, will hand out 700 USD to the gold winners while 400 USD and 200 USD will be given to silver and bronze finishers, respectively. Strong national teams from China, India, Mongolia, Japan, Cuba and Central Asian countries joined the event as part of their preparation for much bigger upcoming competitions.
