Twenty-one Asian boxers achieved medals at the IBA Men’s Elite World Boxing Championships

Twenty-one Asians achieved at least a medal but five of them earned gold medals at the IBA Men’s Elite World Boxing Championships in Dubai over the weekend.

Altogether 428 boxers competed in the IBA Men’s Elite World Boxing Championships in Dubai for the 13 available gold medals. The gold medals were shared between Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan in Dubai.

Afghanistan, Bahrain, Cambodia, IBA-China, IBA-India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Palestine, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan were the 21 participating countries from the Asian continent.

Russia topped the medal standings with their 7 gold, 5 silver and 1 bronze medal which means that all of their boxers earned podium places in Dubai.

Kazakhstan became No.2 behind Russia and the best in Asia with their three gold, one silver and two bronze medals. Kazakhstan’s Saken Bibossynov achieved his second World title in the event’s history, but Orazbek Assylkulov and Ablaikhan Zhussupov bagged their first gold medals. Zhussupov was chasing this dream since 2017 and after three bronze medals, the 28-year-old technician boxer finally reached the top of the podium.

Uzbekistan’s stars as their fantastic veteran boxer, Hasanboy Dusmatov and the defending champion Asadkhudja Muydinkhujaev reached the top of the podium once again. Their two gold medals, four silver and three bronze guaranteed the third position in the medal standings of the IBA Men’s Elite World Boxing Championships.

Kyrgyzstan never had any finalists, just a single bronze medal from the 2023 edition but the 21-year-old Omar Livaza achieved a silver for them for the very first time. Their 22-year-old Ikhtiyar Nishonov added another bronze medal to their historic performance in Dubai.

Another promising Central Asian boxing power, Tajikistan repeated Kyrgyzstan’s performance with one silver and one bronze medal in the competition. Khusravkhon Rakhimov bagged their historic silver while the ASBC Asian Champion Akmal Ubaidov earned a bronze medal in Dubai.

Nepal and Turkmenistan never had any medallists in such level of boxing but Chandra Bahadur Thapa (54kg) and the Asian Games bronze finisher Bayramdurdy Nurmuhammedov (71kg) took first-time bronze medals in Dubai.

Iran was also near to get a medal in the competition while Sri Lanka competed with an 8-strong team and the country won several preliminary bouts in Dubai.
