Tolganay Kassymkhan won her first elite event in Karagandy

The women’s finals of the Galym Zharylgapov Memorial Tournament delivered several close battles and mostly young U23 boxers shined in Karagandy. The Asian Youth Champion 18-year-old Tolganay Kassymkhan made her elite debut in the event with a superb gold medal.
Karagandy, or previously known as Karaganda, is one of the most important cities in Kazakhstan, it is located 230km southeast of the capital, Astana.
Altogether 71 female boxers competed for the titles in the Galym Zharylgapov Memorial Tournament which was one of the last events of the year.
Karagandy region’s Gulnaz Buribayeva won the first female final in the competition, she was too experienced for the 18-year-old Youth World Champion, Yelyanur Turganova at the minimumweight (48kg).
A former Youth World bronze medallist, Zhansaya Rakhymberdi developed rapidly in the recent one year and she walked over to the title of the flyweight (51kg), following the Asian U22 silver medallist Gulnar Turapbay was unable to box against her.
Another Youth World Champion, the 21-year-old Anita Adisheva started the bantamweight (54kg) final better than China’s Yipa Yerguli Yiming and she finished the job after three minutes with a RSC triumph.
Almaty’s Shakhnaz Issayeva stopped Korkem Zhumakhan in semi-finals of the featherweight (57kg) and she was too strong for Zere Markhabay in the final as well.
Two sensational youngsters as Tolganay Kassymkhan and Ayazhan Yermek met in the final of the lightweight (60kg) in Karagandy. Both boxers bagged several Asian junior and youth titles during their career but the 18-year-old Kassymkhan won their meeting by split decision.
Assem Tanatar caused one of the main sensations of the entire event when he defeated the former Asian Champion and World medallist Dariga Shakimova in the next final.
Madina Nurshayeva claimed a gold medal at the 2017 edition of the Asian Women’s Boxing Championships and the experienced boxer outpointed Merey Ibragimova in their final bout.
The two-time Asian Youth Champion and the current Asian U22 gold medallist Shugyla Nalibay had a tight success over the 18-year-old Mariya Sidorenko at the middleweight (75kg) final bout.
Almaty’s Diana Magauyayeva defeated the Asian Youth Champion Kuralay Yeginbaikyzy in another hectic final while Umida Sadykova won the heaviest female weight class in the Galym Zharylgapov Memorial Tournament.
