Tokyo Olympians – China’s Gu Hong is unbeaten since November 2018

The Tokyo Olympic Games is ahead of us the re-scheduled event will be held in Japan between July 23 and August 8. The Asian Boxing Confederation introduces our quota holders who qualified already to Tokyo through the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event which was held in Amman, Jordan on March 2020.

China’s Gu Hong was born in Shanxi on 6th of November in 1988 and after her first experiences she claimed medals in the national events in 2011. Gu Hong competed at the welterweight (69kg) and middleweight (75kg) in the Chinese national events between 2011 and 2015. She won her first national title in 2015 and following that Gu Hong was involved to the national team.

Gu competed at the Wulanchabu 2015 ASBC Asian Women’s Boxing Championships where she defeated her Kazakh and Uzbek rivals therefore she crowned in her first international competition. She continued her winning path in the national events and achieved silver medal at the Astana 2016 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships. Gu was defeated by Valentina Khalzova of Kazakhstan in the final during her first global event.

The Chinese boxer has done a revenge in the final of the Ho Chi Minh City 2017 ASBC Asian Women’s Boxing Championships when she met with Khalzova and defended her continental throne. The importance of the welterweight (69kg) has been significantly increased following the category added to the Olympic program therefore Gu expected more difficult competitions and new rivals.

Following her gold medal at the Strandja Memorial Tournament, she achieved her second silver at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in November 2018. Gu was defeated by Chinese Taipei’s Chen Nien Chin in the final and their big rivalry continued in the further events as well.

Gu Hong defeated Chen Nien Chin with patient style of boxing at the Bangkok 2019 ASBC Asian Women’s Boxing Championships, at the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament and at the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event. Gu defeated all of her rivals in these strong international events and remained unbeaten since the New Delhi 2018 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships.
