Thirteen boys celebrated their titles at the Sri Lankan T.B. Jayah Championships

Sri Lanka’s grassroots event, the T.B. Jayah Boxing Championships have finished after 152 junior boys’ contests in the city of Horana where W.A.L.R. Wickramasinghe and D.T. Gunaweera delivered the best technician boxing in the finals.
Sri Lanka hosted the recent ASBC Asian U22 & Youth Boxing Championships in Colombo this May and their boxers earned record number of medals in the event.
Their next activity is the T.B. Jayah Boxing Championships for the male junior boxers and the Anurudda Shanaka Bandara Trophy for the female junior talents was a great success. More than 60 schools competed for the titles and medals at the T.B. Jayah Boxing Championships.
The two events are in progress in the city of Horana near to Kalutara, which is located in the Western part of the South Asian country. The capital city of Colombo is only 42km far from Horana which has a busy boxing life with several local gyms.
The T.B. Jayah Boxing Championships has a long tradition, the current edition is the 54th in the event’s history which began in 1970 to support the development of the younger generations of boxers.
The pinweight (46kg) was the highlight of the T.B. Jayah Boxing Championships and that smallest category is always delivers the best quality of boxing. St. Thomas College’s W.A.L.R. Wickramasinghe amazed in the final against another well-prepared boxer, D.A.G. Pahasara and he won the best fight of the event by 4:1 split decision.
N.P.M. Manjula had a tough job in the final of the light flyweight (48kg) against B.S. Siriwardana but due to his stamina, he was able to win this title contest by 3:2 split decision. U.S.S. Theksana became the first quick winner in the day of the finals, he stopped S.B.S. Silva in the opening round.
M.I.S.M. Asadullah had a disadvantage on the judges’ scorecards against K.M.D.S. Wickramasinghe after the first round but after that he made a U-turn and stopped his rival in the second, winning the strong light bantamweight (52kg).
D.T. Gunaweera was one of the best boxers in the entire championships and he dominated the bantamweight (54kg) final against D.S.S. De Silva. K. Murajudeen Krishan attacked from the first round in his featherweight (57kg) final and his style of boxing was uncomfortable for M.D.S. Nesaru to take the next title.
W.M.C.M.B.N. Boyagane claimed the second title for the St. Thomas College in Horana where he triumphed over C.S. Munasinghaarchchi at the light welterweight (63kg). M.K. Kalhara (66kg), U.S.D. Rodrigo (70kg), R.B.A.S. Bandara (75kg) and M.G.D. Rashmika (80kg) stopped their final opponents before the last gong.
