The younger generations of boxers won their berths to Bangkok in the Indian Women’s National Trials

The Boxing Federation of India hosted its Women’s National Trials in New Delhi to select their team to the upcoming ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Boxing Championships. India’s younger boxers as Nitu Ghanghas, Nikhat Zareen, Manisha Moun, Sonia Chahal, Lovlina Borgohain and Nupur Sheoran received the right to attend in Bangkok next month.
New Delhi hosted the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships last November where India claimed four podium places including one gold medal. Among their medallists Sonia Chahal, Simranjit Kaur and Lovlina Borgohain will be attending in the upcoming ASBC Asian Confederation Women’s Boxing Championships following their triumphs at the Trials.
Their national icon, the most successful female boxer of the whole world six-time AIBA Women’s World Champion Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte missed the Indian Women’s National Trials as she is fully focusing to the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships which is scheduled to be held in Ulan-Ude, Russia this October.
The first gold medal of the Indian Women’s National Trials was achieved by the youngest winner of the whole event, Nitu Ghanghas who is two-time AIBA Women’s Youth World Champion. She was born in 2000 and joined to the elite level only this January and in the absence of Mary Kom she defeated Punjab’s Manju Rani at the light flyweight (48kg).
Former AIBA Women’s Junior World Champion Nikhat Zareen started the year with a top success at the Strandja Memorial Tournament in Bulgaria and won the flyweight (51kg) in New Delhi. The 22-year-old boxer triumphed over AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships quarter-finalist Pinky Jangra Rani in the final.
Manisha Moun was newcomer in the national team in 2018 and her success over AIP’s Maisnam Meena Kumari Devi at the Trials was another top result from the youngster. Following Manisha’s success at the bantamweight (54kg) AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships silver medallist Sonia Chahal used her longer reach against two-time AIBA Women’s Youth World Champion Sakshi Choudhary in the final of the featherweight (57kg).
Former AIBA Women’s World Champion Sarita Devi Laishram was 18-year-older than her final opponent Parveen and the veteran has done a superb comeback to the team at the lightweight (60kg). Sarita’s career started in the same year as Mary Kom’s international presence and she was one of the pioneer’s in women boxing.
Simranjit Kaur was bronze medallist in the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships last November and has done enough in the final of the light welterweight (64kg) against Pwilao Basumatary. Another bronze medallist from the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships Lovlina Borgohain of Assam controlled her final over Anjali Tushir and secured her berth for Bangkok.
India had a few difficulties at the middleweight (75kg) in the recent years but their 20-year-old Nupur Sheoran of Haryana could be their future solution. At the heaviest weight classes Pooja Rani (81kg) and Seema Poonia (+81kg) are experienced boxers who attended high number of international events in the recent years and controlled their finals in New Delhi.
