The Vietnamese girls and Zafarbek Kamilov made great debut in Colombo

Kyrgyzstan’s Zafarbek Kamilov and the Vietnamese girls made great debut at the ASBC Asian U22 & Youth Boxing Championships in Colombo, Sri Lanka today.

Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, French Polynesia, IBA-India, Indonesia, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, New Zealand, IBA-Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan and Vietnam are the 23 participating nations in this championship.

Indonesia’s Jeklin Ndawajepi lives and trains in the picturesque island of Bali and he had to open the entire championships in a meeting with Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed Almuwallad at the U22 bantamweight (54kg). The Indonesian was taller than his Saudi Arabian opponent but Almuwallad started the first round with the control of the exchanges. The Saudi boxer used the right tactics against the Indonesian and he marched to the quarter-finals in Colombo, winning the first contest of the event.

Kyrgyzstan’s Zafarbek Kamilov and Kazakhstan’s Kenzhe Muratuly both achieved already medals in previous ASBC Asian Boxing Championships but they had to meet each other already in the preliminary stage of the U22 bantamweight (54kg). Kamilov worked from longer distance against the three-years-older Kazakh and the 19-year-old Kyrgyz has done enough to eliminate a top opponent.

Kazakhstan’s next boxer in action was Nurislam Kaldybayev who proved his attacking style of boxing against Nepal’s ASBC Asian Youth competitor Chhiring Wangdi Sherpa in the preliminary of the men’s U22 lightweight (60kg). Kaldybayev not only won the first round against the 19-year-old Nepali boxer but he finished the job in the second after the third standing counts.

Vietnam’s Ngo Ngoc Linh Chi claimed a silver medal in the recent ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Chiang Mai half year ago. The Vietnamese youngster faced United Arab Emirates’ Jawaher Abdulla Al-Gharib who competed also in a few ASBC Championships during her career. The young Vietnamese caught her opponent with heavy punches in the first round and she stopped the boxer from UAE in the first female bout of the competition.

Saudi Arabia’s Yara Alamri was bronze medallist in the 2024 ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships which had a historic result for the Arabic country. Alamri is very talented but she had to face with Kazakhstan’s Gulnar Turapbay and the Central Asian opponent destroyed her next medal dreams in Colombo.

Vietnam’s second female boxer in the session was Song Thi Kim Ngan who met Nepal’s Ghalan Roshni at the U22 flyweight (52kg). The Vietnamese boxer ruled the middle of the ring in the first round and she landed punches from closer distance. Song slowed down the Nepali boxer with effective punches and she controlled the bout from the first seconds until the very last.
