The three-time Asian winner Erdenebat Tsendbaatar returned with a gold medal at the Mongolian National Selection Tournament

Following the Mongolian Youth National Championships, their Elite National Selection Tournament was held in Ulaanbaatar. The winners of the selections will compete for Mongolia at the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Bangkok, Thailand from May 23.

Mongolia missed the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Busto Arsizio, Italy but their best boxers will be there in the last chance competition in Bangkok. Mongolia is aiming for further Olympic spots following their performance in the Asian Games.

One of their top female boxers, Munguntsetseg Enkhjargal was bronze medallist at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in 2023 and she was the best hope at the women’s bantamweight (54kg). The 25-year-old boxer had a tough opponent in the final of the selections but she managed to beat Erdenedalai Michidmaa controlling the three rounds.

Bolortuul Tumurkhuyag is a veteran boxer in the national team, she claimed the title at the 2012 Asian Women’s Boxing Championships. The currently 37-year-old boxer defeated the Asian Championships silver medallist Nomin-Erdene Tugsjargal once again on their repeat match at the featherweight (57kg) final.

Enkh-Amar Kharkhuu is another experienced boxer who claimed a gold at the 2021 ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships. The 32-year-old Rio Olympian faced with his main national rival, the Asian bronze medallist Gantumur Lundaa but he managed to win this difficult featherweight (57kg) contest by 4:1 split decision.

The Asian Games winner and the two-time Asian Champion Erdenebat Tsendbaatar returned to the national squad after three years of break and he moved up to the light welterweight (63.5kg). The two-time Olympian star had two younger opponents in the selection such as Buyandalai Bayarkhuu and Enkhtur Tegshjargal but he won both tight contests.

Otgonbaatar Byamba-Erdene had a very difficult opponent in the National Selection Tournament, he faced Battumur Misheelt, a World Championships bronze medallist boxer. Byamba-Erdene used his height advantage in this light middleweight (71kg) final and he will be Mongolia’s boxer in Bangkok.
