The Philippines, Bahrain and South Korea delighted their fans on Day4

The South Koreans, Bahrain and the boxers from the Philippines delighted the fourth competition day at the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Busto Arsizio, Italy today.

Afghanistan, Bhutan, Bahrain, China, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, South Korea, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, the Philippines, Qatar, Singapore, Tajikistan, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan and Vietnam are the 26 participating Asian countries in Busto Arsizio.

Kazakhstan’s Rimma Volosenko is one of the first boxers in the entire competition who won her third-in-a-row contests in Busto Arsizio. The experienced lightweight (60kg) boxer looked fresh from the first seconds against Uruguay’s Camila Paola Pineiro and she won all of the three rounds in each judges’ scorecards.

South Korea’s best female boxer Oh Yeon Ji qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games where she was one of the seeded athletes at the women’s lightweight (60kg). The multiple Asian Champion had a more difficult contest than she expected against Switzerland’s Anna Jenni but due to her great finish, she was able to win this preliminary bout.

Another Korean boxer, Seong Su Yeon was not a favourite against Hungary’s Veronika Nakota despite her bronze medal at the 2022 Asian Boxing Championships. The South Korean middleweight (75kg) boxer delivered her best round in the second, which was decisive between them, and unexpectedly she eliminated the Youth World Champion.

Uzbekistan’s two-time Asian Youth Champion Aziza Zokirova came from a boxing family and she enjoys her new category, the middleweight (75kg). The 19-year-old boxer had to meet another Asian favourite, Thailand’s Baison Manikon and she was able to reduce the fighting distance successfully to win their hectic contest by 3:2 split decision.

Japan’s Tomoya Tsuboi successfully moved down to the men’s flyweight (51kg) and the previous World Champion managed his next success against Nepal’s Chandra Bahadur Thapa in an exciting contest. Another Asian boxer in this weight class, Jordan’s Huthaifa Eshish caused a small surprise on Day4 when he eliminated China’s Zhang Jiamao.

Philippines’ Rogen Ladon had hard road to the second preliminary round but he dominated his next contest in Busto Arsizio. The veteran Filipino knocked out Morocco’s Said Mortaji in the second round while Kazakhstan’s Saken Bibossynov, South Korea’s Kim In Kyu and Bahrain’s Azat Makhmetov all won their Round of 32 battles.

Philippines’ Asian silver medallist John Marvin had issues in the first round against Iran’s Pouria Amiri and he had disadvantage on the scorecards. The Filipino heavyweight (92kg) boxer found his best rhythm in time and he landed decisive shots in the second round when the referee stopped the bout.

Jordan’s Tokyo Olympian Odai Riyad Al-Hindawi and Portugal’s Antonio Rodrigues had equal points on the scorecards after two rounds but the veteran Asian decided their heavyweight (92kg) contest in the third. Thailand’s Asian Champion Jakkapong Yomkhot looked enough fresh to catch Kyrgyzstan’s three-time Asian medallist Erkin Adylbek Uulu in another excellent contest in this weight category.

Bahrain’s Denys Latypov was his nation’s first ever boxer who qualified for an Olympic Games and the 34-year-old veteran is aiming for the next at the super heavyweight (+92kg) in Busto Arsizio. Latypov shocked Pakistan’s Ali Azhar with his powerful combinations and the referee finally stopped their unequal bout in the third round.
