The new edition of the Nepal Prakash Dahal Memorial Championships opened in Kathmandu
Nepal had several national competitions in the previous one year and their new event, the Prakash Dahal Memorial Championships started in the capital city of the mountainous country in Kathmandu.
Kathmandu hosted the 2019 edition of the South Asian Games and the city arranged several national competitions for all of the age groups in Nepal.
Nepal sent maximum number of 13 boxers to the recent Asian Games but the country was not able to get a medal in this event since 2006. Nepal’s best hopes competed also at the 1st and 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Events in Italy and in Thailand.
Altogether 75 women and 150 men boxers are participating in the new edition of the Prakash Dahal Memorial Championships. Twenty-one teams entered in the female part of the competition and among them the Tribhuvan Army Club is one of the strongest ones with several national team members in their line-ups.
Ten women and 13 men weight categories are in the national event therefore 23 champions will be crowned in Kathmandu. The women boxers are able to participate from the minimumweight (48kg) up to the middleweight (75kg) in Kathmandu.
Susma Tamang, their historic Asian U22 Championships silver medallist is only 22-year-old but she is member of their elite national team since 2021. The minimumweight (48kg) boxer has excellent speed and footwork therefore she has the potential to defend her throne in the national competition.
Their next female ace, Anjani Teli has Indian roots but she represents Nepal in the international stage since 2022 when she joined their elite national team. The strong bantamweight (54kg) boxer, who reached the quarter-finals at the 2023 Women’s World Boxing Championships, is another strong prospect in Nepal.
The Prakash Dahal Memorial Championships has a live streaming page in the PSN channel on the YouTube in the upcoming days.
