The Filipino team finalizes its preparation for the Olympic Games in Thailand’s camp Muak Lek

The Filipino team is in the final stage of their preparation to the upcoming Olympic Games, all of their four qualified boxers train in Muak Lek, Thailand. Irish Magno, Nesthy Petecio, Eumir Felix Marcial and Carlo Paalam all prepare together with the Thai team in their National Training Camp.

The Tokyo Olympic Games will be starting with its first competition day on the 24th of July and all of the teams are in the final stage of their preparations to be in top shape in Japan’s capital. Philippines had only one or two qualified boxers for the previous editions of the Olympic Games but this time their squad contains four strong athletes. Nolito Velasco, Roel Velasco, Ronald Chavez, Elmer Pamisa, Joegin Ladon, Patricio Gaspi and Mitchell Martinez supported their preparations in the recent months.

Philippines’ Irish Magno and Eumir Felix Marcial qualified through the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event which took place in Amman, Jordan on March 2020. AIBA Women’s World Champion Nesthy Petecio and AIBA World Boxing Championships quarter-finalist Carlo Paalam earned their spots from the BTF Ranking.

Nesthy Petecio claimed gold medal at the Ulan-Ude 2019 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships and won several international tournaments in the recent years. She is one of the medal hopefuls at the women’s featherweight (57kg) in the Tokyo Olympic Games and she has 12 years of experiences in the national team to reach her next highlight.

Irish Magno joined to the national team in 2012 and since then she competed in the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships, ASBC Asian Women’s Boxing Championships, Southeast Asian Games and many other events at the flyweight (51kg). The only level which was missing of her was the Olympic Games but she worked hard on it to make in it happen.

Eumir Felix Marcial is one of the highest hopes of the team in the Tokyo Olympic Games, he began his international campaign with a gold medal at the 2011 AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships. The Filipino middleweight (75kg) boxer’s best results are silver from the Yekaterinburg 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships, bronze from the Jakarta 2018 Asian Games and gold from the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event.

Philippines’ fourth qualified boxer, Carlo Paalam robbed into the top level of the sport in 2016 when he earned two bronze medals, first at the ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships, second at the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships. He moved up to the flyweight (52kg) following his bronze at the Jakarta 2018 Asian Games and moved up in the rankings step by step.
