The best Filipino boxers train in Thailand’s camp in Muak Lek

The Filipino women’s and men’s elite national boxing team trains in the Muak Lek together with Thailand’s best boxers. Four women boxers and six male athletes from the Philippines are joined to Thailand’s training camp to Muak Lek. AIBA Women’s World Champion Nesthy Petecio, Asian Games silver medallist Rogen Ladon and Tokyo Olympians as Carlo Paalam and Irish Magno are also in Muak Lek.

The Filipino team has been preparing to the upcoming ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships and also to the Tokyo Olympic Games. The Asian continental event will be starting with its first competition day on May 24 and relocated to Dubai, United Arab Emirates following the decision of ASBC and BFI.

The joint training and sparring camp support both teams’ preparations for the upcoming main events. Thailand and Philippines have got strong rivalries in the region which has tradition from the recent decades. Their boxers will be meeting in the upcoming Southeast Asian Games which is scheduled to be held in Hanoi, Vietnam in the end of the year.

Mr. Ronald Chavez, Mr. Elmer Pamisa, Mr. Reynaldo Galido, Mr. Nolito Velasco and Mr. Donald Walter Abnett are the coaches in the training camp from the Philippine side. Mr. Chavez, Mr. Galido, Mr. Pamisa and Mr. Velasco were Philippines’ key boxers in the 1990s and collected dozens of medals in the international events.

Among Philippines’ top five women boxers four are attending in the training camp in Muak Lek excluding ASBC Asian Champion Josie Gabuco. Tokyo Olympian Irish Magno (51kg), AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships quarter-finalist Aira Villegas (54kg), reigning AIBA Women’s World Champion Nesthy Petecio (57kg) and Riza Pasuit (60kg) are all there in Thailand to increase their physical skills. Asian Games bronze medallist Carlo Paalam and AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Rogen Ladon are Philippines’ best flyweight (52kg) boxers. Ian Clark Bautista and promising Junmilardo Ogayre are the top featherweight (57kg) athletes of the country. Former ASBC Asian Youth Champion James Palicte (63kg) and another young prospect for the future, Marjon Pianar (69kg) are the remaining male boxers in the training camp.
