The Azimjon Toshev Memorial Tournament opened in Khudjand
The Azimjon Toshev Memorial Tournament opened in the Spartak Stadium in Khudjand, Tajikistan which is a new elite competition this year.
The famous boxing city, Khudjand is the capital of the Sughd region and it is located in the northern region of Tajikistan.
The Chairman of the Sughd Province Mr. Rajab Akhmadzoda, the Chairman of the Committee for Youth Affairs and Sports under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, Mr. Zulfikor Gulahmadzoda, the two-time Russian Olympic Champion in boxing, Mr. Aleksey Tishchenko and guests from various countries participated in the Grand Opening Ceremony of the Azimjon Toshev Memorial Tournament.
The President of Tajikistan, his Excellency Mr. Emomali Rakhmon invested more efforts and created better conditions in the country to arrange more international competitions in the Central Asian boxing power.
The boxers can compete at the flyweight (51kg), featherweight (57kg), light welterweight (63.5kg), welterweight (67kg), light middleweight (71kg), light heavyweight (80kg) and super heavyweight (+92kg) in the Azimjon Toshev Memorial Tournament.
The competition is dedicated to the National Unity Day and in memory of the Honoured Coach of the Soviet Union, Mr. Azimjon Toshev.
Altogether 84 elite male boxers are participating in the new event from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
Twenty-eight bouts were held in the first competition day of the Azimjon Toshev Memorial Tournament in Khudjand and all of the winners advanced to the quarter-finals of the event. Boxers at the welterweight (67kg) were the only ones who did not start their campaign in the first day of boxing.
The seven final bouts are scheduled to be held in Khudjand on July 12 and all of the medal ceremonies will take place in the open-air venue.
