The ASBC Extraordinary Congress delivered unity after the open discussions

Following the Asian Boxing Confederation’s Board of Directors Meeting, the ASBC Extraordinary Congress was held at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel in Bangkok today. The meeting decided important questions and after the voting protocols of the affiliated members, the Asian Boxing Confederation remains with IBA until IOC will recognize a new International Federation.

The Asian Boxing Confederation launched a statement short after the International Olympic Committee’s decision to withdraw the recognition of the International Boxing Association and expel the IBA in their IOC Session on June 22.

The ASBC Board of Directors including the ASBC President Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira committed to support our boxers in their pursuit of the Olympic dream. The management of the Asian Boxing Confederation called for an Extraordinary Meeting on June 23 to discuss all of the important questions with the affiliated National Federations.

ASBC President Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira had an opening speech which started the ASBC Extraordinary Congress. This was followed by the local organizing’s representative, Mr. Chaiwat Chotima with his short speech.

ASBC Secretary General Mr. Ali Salameh confirmed the participation of 35 Asian National Federations out of the total number of 43 in the Roll Call. Afghanistan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, and Yemen represented the Extraordinary Congress.  

The participants approved the previous minutes of the meeting, and the detailed ASBC Annual Report. The Asian Boxing Confederation introduced its nation’s rankings, and Uzbekistan became the No.1 with their 79 medals in 2022 ahead of Kazakhstan, India, Mongolia, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Japan, Thailand and Iraq. The representative of the Uzbekistan Boxing Federation, Mr. Malik Babaev received the award from the ASBC management in Bangkok during the meeting today.

Thailand’s official Mr. Chaiwat Chotima was elected as ASBC Honorary President in the next phase of the negotiations. He has been working 10 years in boxing together with ASBC President Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira and he dedicated strong efforts to our sport according to the member federations.

The next part of the Congress was the discussion about the ongoing situation between the IBA and the IOC. Mr. Ali Salameh introduced the history between IOC and IBA, and Mr. Anas Alotaiba, the previous ASBC President also updated the information. The representatives from Tajikistan, India, Pakistan, Iraq, Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, and Saudi Arabia commented on the important topic during the open discussions.

Following the secret ballot voting, 31 National Federations voted to continue with IBA until the new International Federation was recognized by the International Olympic Committee, three proposed to leave IBA while one of the votes was invalid.

Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira and ASBC Vice-President Mr. Aziz Kozhambetov arranged their closing speeches in the end of the ASBC Extraordinary Congress. The ASBC management respects the votes of the majority and underlines the unity of the Asian continent.
