The ASBC bronze medallist Umayanga Mihiran opened his campaign at the 97th Sri Lankan National Championships successfully

The 97th edition of the Sri Lankan National Championships opened with 25 contests on its first competition day at the ocean-side urban park, called Galle Face Green in Colombo. Sri Lanka’s No.1, the ASBC bronze medallist Umayanga Mihiran started his campaign with a solid performance in the capital city.

The Deputy Sports Minister of Sri Lanka, the former short distance runner, Mr. Sugath Thilakarathne was the chief guest at the gala opening ceremony and hailed the decision to conduct the biggest national tournament outdoors at Galle Face.

The President of Sri Lankan Boxing, Mr. Anuruddha Shanaka Bandara followed all of the contests in the first day of boxing together with the chief guest. The National Championships supports the decision makers to select the best boxers for the international competitions.

The Sri Lankan National Championships are organised by the Tri Forces and Police and endorsed by the Sri Lanka Tourism Bureau, promises to be more than just a competition, it is a celebration of sports tourism and a further step to promote boxing in the island.

More than 100 elite boxers are participating in the Sri Lankan National Boxing Championships and the Army, the Navy, the Air Force and the Police teams could be the bests in the competition.

The historic ASBC Asian Elite Championships bronze medallist Godakandalage Pasindu Umayanga Mihiran had to meet a top opponent in the first day at the men’s flyweight (51kg) in Colombo. He controlled all of the three rounds against the veteran Gayan Indika Bandara from the Navy and he won the meeting by unanimous decision.

Army’s W.R.T. Weerakkodi is a multiple National Champion in Sri Lanka and he opened his campaign successfully against Kandy’s teenager Muditha Paris who represented the famous St. Sylvester’s College at the men’s light welterweight (63.5kg).

The PEO Sports is the official broadcaster of the 97th Sri Lankan National Boxing Championships as in the last Clifford Cup.
