The 31st Southeast Asian Games has been postponed in Hanoi and moved to 2022

The Southeast Asian Games is the region’s most important multisport event which holds every two years and boxing is in the official schedule. The 31st Southeast Asian Games was scheduled to be held earlier from 21 November until 2 December in 2021 but the competition moved to 2022 following the confirmation of the decision makers.

The SEA Games Federation approved to postpone the Southeast Asian Games to 2022 due to the current situation of the region. The new date of the multisport event will be determined by the SEA Games Federation Council in the upcoming weeks but the local organizers are not able to held the Games in 2021. The SEA Games will feature altogether 40 different sports, mainly those events which are on the schedule of the Olympic Games.

Vietnam’s capital city Hanoi is the host of the 31st edition of the Southeast Asian Games where Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste and host Vietnam are eligible to attend on it. Following the Southeast Asian Games has been postponed, it means the multisport event will be taking place in the year of the Asian Games.

Thirteen boxing finals were held at the the 30th edition of the Southeast Asian Games in Manila, in the Philippines on December 2019. The host country claimed finally seven titles, Thailand had five champions while Vietnam earned one gold medal in the boxing tournament of the Southeast Asian Games in 2019.

Philippines’ ASBC Asian Women’s Champion Josie Gabuco, Nesthy Petecio, Carlo Paalam, Rogen Ladon and Eumir Felix Marcial all claimed medals in the AIBA World Boxing Championships as elite or youth in the recent five years and all achieved titles in the Southeast Asian Games. Among Thailand’s previous AIBA medallists Sudaporn Seesondee, Chatchai Decha Butdee and Wuttichai Masuk were also among the winners of the last edition of the SEA Games.
