The 24th Nurmagambetov Tournament will be held in Almaty on May 24-30 this year

The 24th edition of the Nurmagambetov Memorial Tournament scheduled to be held in Almaty in May 24-30 this year. Kazakhstan’s best boxers will be attending in the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Dubai in that period but their next generation is also super strong therefore high quality of boxing is guaranteed in Almaty.

Almaty is the former capital of Kazakhstan and the city is famous of its boxing life. Almaty was the venue of the last edition of the AIBA World Boxing Championships in October 2013 where Kazakhstan claimed four gold medals and their athletes were able to repeat that performance in many Asian events as well.

The competition is open for all of the National Federations and the local organizers are expecting high number of boxers to Kazakhstan. The Nurmagambetov Memorial Tournament returns to the boxing map after two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.   

This strong men’s youth international competition was named by the General of the Army, Mr. Sagadat Nurmagambetov to perpetuate his memory. Promotions of boxing in Kazakhstan, further developments, identifying the strongest boxers, strengthening the solidarity and friendship are the further purposes to hold the Nurmagambetov Tournament.

Elite male boxers who were born between 1981 and 2002 are eligible to attend in the Nurmagambetov Tournament. The men’s event will be held in ten different weight categories: light flyweight (49kg), flyweight (52kg), featherweight (57kg), lightweight (60kg), light welterweight (63kg), welterweight (69kg), middleweight (75kg), light heavyweight (81kg), heavyweight (91kg) and super heavyweight (+91kg).

The date of the arrival to the Nurmagambetov Tournament is May 24 while the departure is May 30. All of the team members must have to bring their negative Covid-19 PCR test not later than 72 hours before arrival to Almaty. The healthcare of the athletes is the responsibility of the local Sports Committee in Kazakhstan.

The first edition of the Sagadat Nurmagambetov Tournament was held in the city of Almaty still in the 1990s and many stars competed in the previous more than two and half decades. The 2015 edition was one of the strongest tournaments in the recent years when Kazakhstan claimed four gold medals in the tournament while Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan both reached three top positions in the international elite men competition.
