Thapa, Kazemi, Livaza, Jalilov and Bibossynov are quarter-finalists in Dubai

Nepal, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan all shined in the important sixth competition day at the IBA Men’s Elite World Boxing Championships in Dubai.
Altogether 428 boxers are participating in the IBA Men’s Elite World Boxing Championships in Dubai for the 13 available gold medals.
Afghanistan, Bahrain, Cambodia, IBA-China, IBA-India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Palestine, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan are the 21 participating countries from the Asian continent.
Iran’s Mehdi Kazemi was member of their super strong youth team in 2024 and he claimed a bronze medal at the IBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Budva. The 19-year-old bantamweight (54kg) boxer felt the tempo well against Australia’s Jawaad Shamshir and he eliminated the Seed No.3 in the competition.
Nepal’s Lal Prasad Upreti made a history in the fifth competition day when he became his nation’s first ever male boxer, who joined to the quarter-finals in a World Championship. His teammate, Chandra Bahadur Thapa has similar level of technical skills and experience but he had a very tough opponent, Armenia’s Davit Yegoryan today. Thapa had an emotional performance and he boxed over his previous level to be Nepal’s second pugilist in the quarter-finals stage of the event.
Kazakhstan’s 2021 World Champion Saken Bibossynov is one of the stars of the bantamweight (54kg) in Dubai and he had a strong start against Tanzania’s Issa Faki in the first round. The 28-year-old Kazakh used his distance amazingly in the second round when he landed clear counter-punches therefore Bibossynov won their contests by large margin of difference on the scorecards.
Uzbekistan’s defending ASBC Asian Elite Champion at the flyweight (51kg), Asilbek Jalilov moved up to the bantamweight (54kg) because of his veteran star teammate, Hasanboy Dusmatov. Jalilov proved that he is still enough tall for this new category and he was untouchable for Ghana’s Mohamed Amadu, which means that the 22-year-old Uzbek is also a quarter-finalist in Dubai.
Kyrgyzstan’s ASBC Asian U22 Champion Omar Livaza eliminated one of the Uzbek favourites in the recent Round of 32 but he had another hard battle for the quarter-finals at the light welterweight (63.5kg). The 21-year-old Kyrgyz kept his concentration until the very last seconds to beat Armenia’s experienced Narek Hovhannisyan by bout review.
Kazakhstan’s Yertugan Zeinullinov competed in his first major international event 12 years ago and he was dominant against an IBA-Pro boxer, Jose Manuel Aguirre at the light welterweight (63.5kg). The next Kazakh boxer, the Youth World silver medallist Daulet Tulemissov lost to Uzbekistan’s Akmaljon Isroilov at the cruiserweight (86kg).
Turkmenistan’s new sensation at the super heavyweight (+92kg), Dovlet Yslamov advanced to the quarter-finals on Day5 and his teammate, the Asian Games bronze medallist Bayramdurdy Nurmuhammedov also managed his pathway to the last eight. Turkmenistan’s No.1 dominated his contest over another Asian boxer, Iran’s Amir Moslem Maghsoudi at the light middleweight (71kg).
