Thailand on the top with five titles at the Southeast Asian Games

Eight final contests took place in the seventh competition day at the boxing tournament of the Southeast Asian Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia today. Thailand impressed in the session, five of their boxers earned their titles in the SEA Games.

Altogether 24 female and 71 male boxers are competing for the 16 available titles in Phnom Penh. Host Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste and Vietnam are the participating countries in the boxing event of the Southeast Asian Games.

Thailand’s Jutamas Jitpong defeated all of her rivals in the SEA Games including Vietnam’s two-time ASBC Asian Champion Nguyen Thi Tam and Philippines’ Tokyo Olympian Irish Magno therefore she deserved to take the title of the women’s bantamweight (54kg).

Her teammate, Baison Manikon, the ASBC Asian U22 Champion controlled the first and the second rounds against Cambodia’s ex-Kazakh boxer, Dana Diday and her height advantage and strength decided their women’s middleweight (75kg) final.

Thailand earned three gold medals in the men’s part of the competition in Phnom Penh where Thanarat Saengphet took the first title in the battle of the World medallists. The 21-year-old Thai proved his progress against Philippines’ Rogen Ladon and earned the gold medal of the men’s flyweight (51kg).

Somchay Wongsuwan defended his light welterweight (63.5kg) throne following his success over Cambodia’s former Cuban, Ratha Ven. The local boxer earned a silver medal at the 2015 SEA Games and repeated that performance on home soil today.

Jakkapong Yomkhot, the reigning ASBC Asian Champion at the cruiserweight (86kg), had a tough opponent in the finals, the defending SEA Games winner Maikhel Roberrd Muskita of Indonesia. The 28-year-old Thai controlled two out of the three rounds and he was able to take the title in Phnom Penh.

Vietnam bagged two titles in the first part of the finals, their experienced Ha Thi Linh defeated Philippines’ Riza Pasuit at the women’s light welterweight (63kg). Her teammate, Bui Phuoc Tung delivered the main sensation of the day, his shocking punches knocked out Thailand’s favourite, the Youth Olympic Games winner Atichai Phoemsap in the final of the men’s light middleweight (71kg).

Philippines’ 29-year-old Ian Clark Bautista had an easy success in the last edition of the SEA Games and he defended his title at the men’s featherweight (57kg) today. The Filipino dominated all of the three rounds against Indonesia’s Asri Udin in their final contest.

The second part of the finals at the Southeast Asian Games will be held tomorrow on Sunday.
