Ten nations shared the first 28 quota places for Tokyo at the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event

The first part of the quarter-finals was held in the sixth competition day of the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Amman, Jordan. All of the 28 winners of the day advanced to the semi-finals and qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Kazakhstan, India, China, Uzbekistan, Australia, Jordan, Philippines, Chinese Taipei, Thailand and New Zealand earned the first 28 spots for Tokyo.

More than 220 boxers are competing in the event which is one of the most important Asian challenges of the year. Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, India, China, Australia, Thailand, South Korea, Japan, Mongolia, Chinese Taipei, Tajikistan, Jordan, Iran, Kyrgyzstan and Philippines attend in the event with the biggest and strongest delegations in Amman.

China’s Li Qian qualified for her second Olympic Games after Rio

China’s AIBA Women’s World Champion Li Qian was bronze medallist in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and she will have the chance to compete in Tokyo as well. The Chinese middleweight (75kg) boxer was too smart and tall to Mongolia’s Munkhbat Myagmarjargal on their re-match in Amman. Li Qian controlled the rounds with her longer hands and won the bout unanimously over the 28-year-old Mongolian. India’s first quota place for Tokyo was achieved by Pooja Rani who eliminated Thailand’s teenager Pornnipa Chutee.

Uzbekistan’s Bobo-Usmon Baturov and Kazakhstan’s Ablaikhan Zhussupov won their key fights on Day6

Uzbekistan’s ASBC Asian Champion and Asian Games winner Bobo-Usmon Baturov realized his quota place for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games following his success over China’s veteran boxer Maimaitituersun Qiong at the welterweight (69kg). Kazakhstan’s Ablaikhan Zhussupov defeated Thailand’s Asian Games winner Wuttichai Masuk in the Yekaterinburg 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships therefore the two stars knew each other well enough. Masuk used better tactic than last time but Zhussupov was able to beat his experienced Thai rival once again.

Kazakhstan’s Vasiliy Levit qualified for his next Olympic Games

Kazakhstan’s Vasiliy Levit was silver medallist in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and he won the title of the ASBC Asian Boxing Championships three-times. Levit had to meet in the quarter-finals with Tajikistan’s National Champion Davlat Boltayev who is newcomer in the international events. The experienced Kazakh boxer was quicker in the first and second rounds than his Tajik opponent. Levit landed several clear punches in that period while Boltayev tried to work more on feet but he did not have any successful weapons to avoid Levit’s attacks. The Kazakh boxer dominated their fight and earned the quota place for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Uzbekistan’s Sanjar Tursunov defeated his Iranian rival on Day6

Uzbekistan’s Sanjar Tursunov was bronze medallist in the Hamburg 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships short after his 19th birthday. The ASBC Asian Boxing Championships silver medallist heavyweight (91kg) boxer had to meet in a key quarter-final bout with Iran’s Toufan Sharifi who joined to the national team only last year. The Uzbek boxer began the bout better than his Iranian opponent but both boxers increased their rhythms in the second period. Sharifi launched many punches but Tursunov’s defense was too good for the Iranian and the Uzbek won all of the rounds in each scorecard.

Chinese Taipei’s Chen Nien Chin and Thailand’s Baison Manikon won their nation’s first Olympic spots

Chinese Taipei’s AIBA Women’s World Champion Chen Nien Chin qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and she can prepare to her next challenge in Tokyo following her success over Mongolia’s Shinetsetseg Uranbileg at the women’s welterweight (69kg). Chen’s victory meant she earned Chinese Taipei’s first Olympic quota for Tokyo same as four years ago. Philippines’ first quota was taken by Eumir Felix Marcial

Philippines’ Eumir Felix Marcial claimed silver medal at the Yekaterinburg 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships and he was seeded as No.1 at the men’s middleweight (75kg). The 24-year-old Filipino has got now nine years of experiences in the international events and his developments are continuous. Marcial used his strength in the important quarter-finals against Mongolia’s Byamba-Erdene Otgonbaatar who won the Ahmet Comert Tournament in Turkey this January. Philippines’ No.1 turned up the heat in the third round and following his serious combinations the referee confirmed his RSC success taking his country’s first quota in boxing for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The favourite boxers dominated their quarter-finals at the super heavyweight (+91kg)

Uzbekistan’s defending AIBA World Champion Bakhodir Jalolov is the main favourite at the super heavyweight (+91kg) in Amman where he had to do his very best to beat Bahrain’s No.1 Denys Latypov in the quarter-finals. India’s experienced Satish Kumar was too strong for Mongolia’s veteran Daivii Otgonbayar before Australia’s AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Justis Huni defeated New Zealand’s Leuila Mau’u. The fourth quota place in this weight class was earned by Kazakhstan’s two-time AIBA World Boxing Championships silver medallist Kamshybek Kunkabayev who demonstrated his power against China’s Xinjiang-based Maimaiti Ahemaiti.
