South Korea’s Yang Hee Guen delivered the surprise of the day in the Republic of Kazakhstan President’s Cup

The fifth edition of the Republic of Kazakhstan President’s Cup continued with its third competition day in Astana, Kazakhstan where 16 bouts were held in one session. The winners of today’s contests advanced to the semi-finals of the event and besides to the host nation, Kyrgyzstan, India, Philippines, South Korea, Russia and Uzbekistan also won contests.
Philippines’ AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships silver medallist Nesthy Petecio moved up to the lightweight (60kg) to acclimatize in the first year of the new Olympic era. The Filipino boxer was too smart and too quick for Kazakhstan’s Ulbala Almenova in her debuting contest and she continued her winning path against Natalya Tarasenko. Petecio defeated the host nation’s second boxer and advanced to the semi-finals.
Kazakhstan’s Rimma Volosenko received the right to box in the last edition of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Astana but she was not able to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The lightweight (60kg) boxer returned in top shape, won the Kazakh National Championships, started well enough against Uzbekistan’s Rio 2016 Olympian Yodgoroy Mirzaeva and continued her winning series beating India’s Siwi Boora.
Kazakhstan’s Rio 2016 Olympic Games bronze medallist and defending ASBC Asian Women’s Champion Dariga Shakimova was excellent in her debuting contest against Uzbekistan’s Nafisakhon Askarova and defeated her teammate Akerke Bakhytzhan in her quarter-final. Shakimova’s next opponent will be India’s Lavlina Borgohain who eliminated Kazakhstan’s Akbota Isagulova by unanimous decision in the women’s middleweight (75kg).
Kazakhstan’s defending AIBA Youth World Champion Sadreddin Akhmedov won the gold medal at the Thailand International Invitational Tournament two months ago and opened his participation with a superb success against Philippines’ promising hope, Joel Bacho. The 19-year-old Kazakh welterweight (69kg) boxer will be meeting with his teammate Bekzod Khalmetov in the semi-finals.
Uzbekistan’s current National Champion at the welterweight (69kg) Bobo-Usmon Boturov achieved the title at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku one month ago and he arrived to Astana in top shape once again. The 22-year-old Uzbek boxer used his strength against Kazakhstan’s Kanagat Maralov and also joined to the last four as Akhmedov. Boturov will be boxing with Kyrgyzstan’s Adilet Batyraliev in the next semi-finals of the event.
Kazakhstan’s Yerik Alzhanov moved up to the light heavyweight (81kg) in the recent months and claimed silver medal in the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships in Tashkent. The 25-year-old boxer began strongly against South Korea’s experienced Yang Hee Guen but the ringside doctor finished their contest in the second due Alzhanov’s injury. The South Korean boxer advanced to the semi-finals beating one of his main rival in Astana.
Kyrgyzstan’s Rio 2016 Olympian Erkin Adylbek Uulu could not qualify for the Hamburg 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships in Tashkent one month ago but he proved better performance this time in Astana. The Kyrgyz light heavyweight (81kg) boxer used his longer hands against Kazakhstan’s experienced Shaimurat Kusainov and his stamina was enough to advance to the semi-final of the event.
