Sonia Lather Singh, Shiva Thapa and Mohamed Hussamuddin deserved their quarter-final successes at the Strandja Memorial Tournament

The Strandja Memorial Tournament is one of the strongest elite competitions in the whole world which is a preparation event before the Olympic Qualifiers. India’s three experienced boxers as Sonia Lather Singh, Shiva Thapa and Mohamed Hussamuddin deserved their successes in the quarter-finals of the Strandja Memorial Tournament today.

The 71st edition of the Strandja Memorial Tournament is a small world event with 34 nations on the board from four different Confederations. Among the best boxing nations of the world Russia, United States of America, India, Ireland, Brazil, Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, France, Ukraine, Morocco, Romania, Poland and many others are there in Sofia.

India’s Sonia Lather Singh claimed silver medal in the Astana 2016 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships and following her tough performance in December at the Big Bout Boxing League, she arrived to Sofia as a secret favourite at the featherweight (57kg). The experienced Indian met with Ireland’s two-time Commonwealth Games silver medallist Michaela Walsh which was one of the highlights of the third competition day. Lather had amazing fighting spirit against one of the best European boxers and landed enough punches to win the bout by split decision.

India’s Mohamed Hussamuddin claimed silver medal already at the 2017 edition of the Strandja Memorial Tournament which was one of his first ever international competitions. The 26-year-old bantamweight (57kg) boxer returned to Sofia and following his successful preliminaries, he met with Belgium’s Vasile Usturoi in the quarter-finals. The Indian caught his Belgian rival with nice hooks and worked strongly against the boxer who defeated top rivals in 2019. Hussamuddin kept his fighting level until the end of the last round and joined to the last four in Sofia.

India’s third top hope in the quarter-finals was former ASBC Asian Champion Shiva Thapa who is a two-time Olympian boxer and one of the most experienced athletes at the lightweight (63kg). The 26-year-old Indian had the well-built tactic against Ireland’s George Bates and he followed it step by step in the third day of boxing. Thapa worked better on feet than his Irish rival and won the bout unanimously in Sofia which means he is also a guaranteed medallist.
