Mongolia had four boxers in the London 2012 Olympic Games but the country was able to do better in the qualification process of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Finally six Mongolians qualified for the August’s event and will be representing the country in the boxing tournament of the Olympic Games.
The boxing tournament of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will be starting on August 6 where 63 Asians can take part for the medals in Brazil. Among them 6 came from Mongolia which is their best performance since the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games when the country sent seven boxers to the Games in the 24th edition. The difference is huge as there was no qualification process for the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games yet which means Mongolia did amazing performance in the quota events in the recent months.
Mongolia qualified boxers through from the Light Flyweight class (49 kg) up to the Welterweight class (69 kg) and one of them has got Olympic experience from London. The average age of the six qualified Mongolian boxers is 24.5 years which means the new team has got also experiences besides to their skills.
Mongolia’s No.1 current ASBC Asian Confederation Champion and Incheon 2014 Asian Games winner Dorjnyambuu Otgondalai could not win medal in the Doha 2015 AIBA World Boxing Championships but the Lightweight class (60 kg) boxer is ready to show his skills once again in the most important event of the year. Otgondalai won the AIBA Asian & Oceanian Olympic Qualification Event in Qian’an and has got the chance to be seeded in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships bronze medallist 23-year-old Gankhuyag Ganerdene is even better form than last year and defeated Russia’s EUBC European Youth Champion Ivan Abramov in the Chemistry Cup in Halle and the host nation’s two best boxers in the Light Flyweight class (49 kg). He continued that success in the AIBA Asian & Oceanian Olympic Qualification Event where he was able to beat India’s strong Laishram Devendro Singh in the Box-off.
Mongolia’s Summer Universiade Games winner Enkh-Amar Kharkhuu returned to the national team this January after his suspension and defeated Morocco’s Rio 2016 Olympian Achraf Kharroubi and also two top German athletes such as AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Ronny Beblik and Baku 2015 European Games bronze medallist Hamza Touba in Halle during his preparation. He was near to qualify from Qian’an but finally his efforts were enough to get the spot in the World Olympic Qualification Event in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Erdenebat Tsendbaatar will be turning to 20 only later this year but he reached the world class level very quickly and the three-time National Elite Champion secured Mongolia’s third gold medal in the Chemistry Cup in Halle, Germany during his preparation. The Bantamweight class (56 kg) boxer eliminated China’s APB Champion Zhang Jiawei which was one of his biggest scalp in his career. Tsendbaatar continued the winning path in the important World Olympic Qualification Event where he finally claimed silver medal and could be Mongolia’s secret weapon in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
World Military Games winner Battarsukh Chinzorig joined to the national team in 2013 and has done amazing job in the international level. The 25-year-old boxer was quarter-finalist in the Incheon 2014 Asian Games and delivered an important silver medal from the AIBA Asian & Oceanian Olympic Qualification Event where only Kazakhstan’s teenage star Ablaikhan Zhakypov was able to stop him in a narrow final. The Light Welterweight class (64 kg) boxer is also among the bests Asians in his weight category and has got realistic chance to beat his top rivals in Rio de Janeiro.
Mongolia’s London 2012 Olympian Byamba Tuvshinbat is an experienced boxer with more than 400 bouts during his career. He is the lone boxer in the team who has got experiences from the London 2012 Olympic Games. Tuvshinbat was involved to the national squad still in 2006 and attended in several AIBA and ASBC events during his career. The Welterweight class (69 kg) boxer exceeded the expectations in the Box-off at the AIBA Asian & Oceanian Olympic Qualification Event in Qian’an where he could beat Philippines’ favourite Eumir Felix Marcial in the key contest for Rio.
